The Probate Records page is an index to all probate records contained in the MarineLives-Tools wiki. New probate records can be added by users of the MarineLives-Tools wiki who have registered with the MarineLives project team.

The MarineLives-Tools wiki is a companion wiki to [[HCA 13/71: |Annotate HCA 13/71]], [[HCA 13/72: |Annotate HCA 13/72]] and [[HCA 13/73: |Annotate HCA 13/73]].  These four wikis are made available free of charge to anyone (whether academic, student, or enthusiast) who takes an interest in the history of the Early Modern world.

The wikis are the creation of the MarineLives project team, an academic/public history group, dedicated to the transcription, annotation and use of English Admiralty Court records, 1650-1669.

----

'''Adding footnotes'''

* Go into edit mode

* Insert immediately after the sentence or phrase you wish to annotate the following macro:

<nowiki><ref>This is the footnote text</ref></nowiki>

* Replace 'This is the footnote text' with the footnote you wish to add, using the format: first name, surname, title, (place of publication, date of publication), page or folio number

* Save the page

----

'''Creating an electronic link within the footnote to a digital source'''

* Using the link icon in the top RH menu bar in your open window, highlight the footnote text which you wish to become the clickable link. This will place square brackets round the text, within the existing curved brackets

e.g. <nowiki><ref>[Electronic link to a digital source]</ref></nowiki>

* Insert the URL of the digital source IN FRONT of the existing text, but still within the square brackets, leaving one space between the end of the URL and the start of the footnote text

e.g. <nowiki><ref>[http://XXXXX Electronic link to a digital source]</ref></nowiki>

  1. The London merchant, Samuel Moyer, was one of the owners and freighters of the ship Elizabeth and Anne sent in 1655 to load currants in Nathalgo in the Eastern Mediiterranean. The other owners were William Williams, John Langley, James Wich (probably alias James Wyche, merchant), and Richard Langford, a mariner from Poplar. SEE HCA 13/71 f.13r
  2. John Bateman, a thirty-five year old citizen of London and pewterer, was deposed in March 1658, regarding a shipment of tin from Plymouth, which had been lost on the Isaack. See HCA 13/72 f.273r
  3. Thomas Bonfoy, a thirty-seaven year old London merchant was deposed in June 1658 regarding the Canary wine trade. See HCA 13/72 f.337r
  4. Captaine Alexander Twiddy stated in his deposition of June 1657 that he was present "in the shopp of Thomas Bruce a Scrivener in king streete Westminster" on June 28th, 1653, where he witnessed the signing and sealing of a bill of sale. The scrivener, Thomas Bruce, appears to have died two or three years later, with his will proved in July 1656. See HCA 13/72 f.55v
  5. The fifty year old Gillingham baker, Robert Burdin, gave a witness statement on the behalfe of Henry Jolfe, the late master of a Rochester hoy. Jolfe's wages had not been paid. Burdin argued that Jolfe had performed well as master, since one of the hoy's owners gave Jolfe "a peece of Cotton to make his children coates, which hee sayd hee gave him for his care in his sayd imployment." See HCA 13/72 f.319r
  6. The brothers Edward and John Bushell were in partnership, trading with Portugal, Brazil, Barbados and elsewhere. For a time, John Bushell was resident in Lisbon. See HCA 13/72 f.294v
  7. Christopher Clitheroe, a forty one year old gentleman of Black ffryers in the City of London, was a witness in the HCA in August 1658. See HCA 13/72 f.442v
  8. See HCA 13/72 f.105v
  9. John Daniel, a forty year old Notary publique of the city of London, was a deponent in HCA 13/72 f.16v
  10. Jenkin Ellis was the subject of extensive litigation over his wharf between Saint Catherine's dock and Saint Catherine's stairs. See for example: HCA 13/72 f.350r
  11. John Grant was a forty-nine year old mariner of Gillingham, Kent, when he was deposed in June 1658 in the case of Henry Jolfe, late master of the hoy the Thomas and Katherine against its owners for his wages. See HCA 13/72 f.319r
  12. Thomas Grant was a fifty year old mariner of London, who had sailed as master of ships on multiple voyages within the Mediterranean over twenty years. It is possible, though somewhat unlikely, that his will is that of the Thomas Grant, mariner, of Mariner of Saint Botolph without Aldgate, proved in January 1680. See HCA 13/72 f.189r
  13. Thomas Gregg, a forty-four year old pewterer of the parish of Saint Andrew in holborne, London, was deposed in March 1658 regarding the loss of tin sent in the Isaack from Plymouth. He was still resident in Saint Andrew Holborne when his will was proved in 1683, putting him at ca. sixty-seven when he died. See HCA 13/72 f.272v
  14. Joseph Hammond was one of the owners of the Packet frigot (alt. Parker frigot), together with John Ray, William Cockcroft, and James Drawater See HCA 13/72 f.334r
  15. Deposition of Humphrey Hardwick of Saint Nicholas Lane, London, Merchant, aged 29 yeares, HCA 13/71 f.52v
  16. The notary publique, Frederick Ixem, was thirty years of age when he was deposed regarding the ship the Poppekerk in June 1657. His writing office was near the Royal Exchange, London. He appears in the London Hearth Tax returns for 1662 in the first precinct of the Coleman Street ward in a residence of six hearths. See HCA 13/72 f.56v
  17. Lucas Jacobs mentioned as a London merchant, who as "Lucas Jacobs and company" was owner of a lading of wheat shipped by Abraham Stockman, a merchant of Hamburg, in a Dutch crewed ship or "bowier" named the Dove, from Hamburg to London. See HCA 13/65 f.4r
  18. A suit was brought in the HCA in March 1658 against the ship the Providence by Catherine kilverth. The suit, in which the stationer and printer, Hezekiah Usher of Boston, New England, was deposed, mentions Roger Kilvart and Company. On the assumption that this Roger Kilverth was a London merchant and was deceased, this is a probable match with the will of Roger Kilvert, merchant of London, which was proved in September 1657. See HCA 13/72 f.273v
  19. Robert Moulins, a pewterer of Saint Margaret Lothbury London, was deposed in March 1658 regarding the loss of tin sent from Plymouth on the Isaack. He may be the same man whose will was proved later that year, in September 1658, suggesting he died an early death at around the age of thirty. Alternatively the will may have been of an eponymous relative. See HCA 13/72 f.272r
  20. A Rederiff mariner named Roger Paxton was deposed in April 1658 on behalf of Joseph Dobins, master of the Peter, regarding a voyage from Lisbon to Brazil. This may be the same Roger Paxton, also of Redriff, Surrey, whose will was proved in March 1700, which would place him at roughly seventy-two years of age at his death. However, the will may also be that of a relative. See HCA 13/72 f.281r
  21. Gowen Paynter was a merchant resident in the Canary islands, who served as correspondent and agent for John Page, and for other English merchants. See, for example HCA 13/72 f.335v
  22. Gregory Peake was a lawyer of Middle Temple, who in November 1657 at the age of 39 deposed in the case of Sowden against Haddock on behalf of Sowden. He stated that he and his servant (and fellow deponent) Richard Price had last August compared a copy of the exhibit in the case with the original, which was at the Auditor's office in Warwick Lane, London, and hadthereupon signed the copy. See HCA 13/72 f.175v
  23. John Rayment, a Ratcliff ropemaker, was just twenty-two years old when he was deposed in the case of Edward Bartlet against the ship the Edward and Richard Rooke and Company. See HCA 13/72 f.322v
  24. Robert Richbell was a deponent in HCA 13/72 f.9v
  25. Mathew Sherley, mariner of Poplar, was forty years old in March 1658 when he was deposed on behalfe of Zachary Browne, the late commander of the ship the English ship of war, the Hercules the case of HCA 13/72 f.308v
  26. John Shorter (later Sir John Shorter) appears in partnership with William Warren. See HCA 13/72 f.104v
  27. Peter Silvester was a deponent in HCA 13/72 f.25r
  28. Ambrose Smith mentioned as a merchant and part-owner of the Endeavour of Arundell. See HCA 13/72 f.110v
  29. See also Captaine Thomas Taylor, a shipwright of Wapping, was fifty-six years old when he was deposed in July 1658 in the case of Warner against Matson and how. See HCA 13/72 f.321v
  30. Isaack Tillard, a merchant of Plymouth, was the correspondent of the Saint Brides London grocer William Wheatley, as acknowledged in Wheatley's deposition in HCA 13/72 f.307r
  31. John Tuffley, a twenty-one year old cooper of the parish of Saint Olave Hartstreete was deposed in May 1658 in a case concerning sugar brought to London in the Oporto Merchant. Tuffley was at the time a servant to the cooper Alexander fowler, who was usually imploed by Alexander Bence and Edward Bushell in their affairs. This may be the same John Tuffley, whose will, showing him as a cooper of Saint Botolph Algate London, was proved in 1686. This would make Tuffley ca. forty-nine years of age at his death. See HCA 13/72 f.297v
  32. Adrian Vanderpost, Joseph Tilley, Robert Cordell and company were the owners of the fortune in 1654 and 1655, which was sent to Salley and Santa Cruse in Barbary, and then put in at Cadiz in Spain due to foul weather. See HCA 13/72 f.17r
  33. See HCA 13/72 f.336v
  34. William Westcot (or Wescott), a forty-two year old pewterer of Saint Buttolphs Algate London, was deposed in March 1658 regarding the loss of tin sent from Plymouth in the Isaack. His will records him in the same parish when it was proved in 1682, when he was ca. sixty-six years of age. See HCA 13/72 f.271v
  35. The London merchant John Wheake was aged thirty-two when he was deposed in the case of Swan against Whittle in June 1657. He stated in his deposition that he had been a factor living in Bilboa, Spain, for twelve years. He is probably the merchant John Wheakle of London whose will was proved in December 1668, making him ca. forty-three at his death. See HCA 13/72 f.56v
  36. William Wheatley, a thirty year old grocer resident in the parish of Saint Brides in 1658, was deposed in HCA 13/72 f.307r
  37. Richard Wilde, a 19 year old London merchant, was deposed in HCA 13/72 f.12v in a case concerning Canary wines
