Abstract & context

The mariner James Moyer (c. 1585 -1636/37) was a master mariner of considerable prominence. He was the eldest son of Lawrence Moyer, who had died when James was just 12 years old. He appears on a 1627 list of grants of marque as master of the Royal Merchant, which is described as a ship of 600 tons, and in a secondary source reporting a London shipping list of 1629 as being master of a ship of 500 tons (probably the same ship). James Moyer was engaged in the Levant trade and was buried at Smyrna in March 1636/7. His son Samuel Moyer was a London merchant with broad commercial interests.
