Week Three goals

In the third week of the MarineLives Summer Transcription Programme we will:

(1) Review and edit the transcriptions done by each team member in week two

(2) Discuss tricky words and expressions team members have come across

(3) Do one page of transcription each, this week chosen from HCA 13/68 (See emailed allocations)

(4) Develop search strategies to find and synthesise material on the Three Silver Ships project

One to One calls to be held with each team member

Colin will set up 1:1 calls with each team member lasting roughly 30 minutes each to review week two transcriptions, to discuss palaeographical issues, and to explore search strategies for the Three Silver Ships project

Search strategies for the Three Silver Ships project

To search the wiki, enter search terms in the search box at the top RH corner of any wiki page

Write profiles of people, ships and places, and add dates and events to the timeline. You will find a wiki page waiting for your contributions at the Three Silver Ships.

(1) Look for information about key people

For example:

Christian Cloppenburgh - master of the ship the Salvadore
Otto George - master of the ship the Sampson

Write a short profile of a person, based upon your research

For example, the rather wonderful Magdalena Hendricks - Dutch born witness for the Commonwealth
William Astell, a former military man (and surgeon) fallen on hard times, and also a witness for the Commonwealth

(2) Look for information about key ships

Remember that spelling variants exist

For example: the Salvador and the Salvadore

(3) Look for information about key places mentioned in the case

For example; Lubeck, Hamburg, Cadiz, Ostend, Amsterdam, Woolwich

Remember that spelling variants exist
