after the ladeinge of this rendents<br />
and the arlate Mr Showers goods<br />
in this cause controverted and after<br />
the same were entred in the Custome<br />
house at Exeter for this rendents and<br />
the arlate Mr Showers his account<br />
write (sic) a letter unto the arlate Monnseir<br />
Villen Jean Giuchett President in Saint<br />
Maloes wherein he did inclose an<br />
Invoice, directed unto them for the receipt<br />
of the goods belonginge unto this rendent<br />
and the said William Shower
To the second pretensed positions hee<br />
answereth and beleeveth that the letter<br />
and Invoice arlate were and remained<br />
aboard the said shippe the ''diamond'' att<br />
such time as shee was seized uppon,<br />
surprized and taken by the alate shipps<br />
the ''Merchant Adventure'' and the ''Peter''<br />
and the said letter, and Invoice were and<br />
are written with the proper handwritinge<br />
of the arlate Mr Showers and directed into<br />
the said Mounseiur Villen Jean Guichett<br />
which this rendent beleeveth was done<br />
by reason of the danger aforesaid,<br />
meerely colourably and to avoid arrests<br />
and seizures in ffrannce, which otherwise<br />
would have been laid uppon them in case<br />
they had gone in this rendents and Mr Showers<br />
owne names whereas in truth all and<br />
singular the goods aforesaid claimed by the<br />
arlate William Showers and this rendent<br />
were Showers and this rendent<br />
