goods by ffrenchmen for satisfaction of
pretended iniuries done unto them by the
English the arlate William Showers [?XXX XXXXX]
after the ladeinge of this rendents
and the arlate Mr Showers goods
in this cause controverted and after
the same were entred in the Custome
house at Exeter for this rendents and
the arlate Mr Showers his account
write (sic) a letter unto the arlate Monnseir
Villen Jean Giuchett President in Saint
Maloes wherein he did inclose an
Invoice, directed unto them for the receipt
of the goods belonginge unto this rendent
and the said William Shower
To the second pretensed positions hee
answereth and beleeveth that the letter
and Invoice arlate were and remained
aboard the said shippe the diamond att
such time as shee was seized uppon,
surprized and taken by the alate shipps
the Merchant Adventure and the Peter
and the said letter, and Invoice were and
are written with the proper handwritinge
of the arlate Mr Showers and directed into
the said Mounseiur Villen Jean Guichett
which this rendent beleeveth was done
by reason of the danger aforesaid,
meerely colourably and to avoid arrests
and seizures in ffrannce, which otherwise
would have been laid uppon them in case
they had gone in this rendents and Mr Showers
owne names whereas in truth all and
singular the goods aforesaid claimed by the
arlate William Showers and this rendent
were
