To the first second and third articles hee saith and deposeth that in and<br />
during the monthes of June and July 1650 arlate the<br />
producent Andrew Rand (whom this deponent very well knoweth)<br />
was at Bahia de Tadas las Santos in Brazila with his shipp<br />
the ''Thomas and Lucy'' whereof hee was commannder, and that<br />
the shipp of Portugall called ''Nostra Senora da''<br />
''Rosario'' (whereof George Wheeler was master or Supercargo) was alsoe there,<br />
which hee knoweth because hee this deponent was then alsoe<br />
there with the shipp the ''Scipio'' whereof hee was commannder.<br />
And this deponent well knoweth that the said Captaine Rand<br />
had there severall chests of sugar for his accompt, which hee saith<br />
were the proceede of goods which hee carried thether, and the said<br />
Rand (as this deponent heard him say) [?resolved] to transport the same<br />
for Portugall, and saith that one Belchier vas Revera Resident<br />
in Bahia was a merchant to whom Captaine Rand was recommended<br />
from Lisbone by one James Lagan for assistance at Bahia, and<br />
accordingly the said Belchier did assist him and there was<br />
familiaritie and correspondance betweene them of this deponents<br />
sight and knowledge, and the said Belchier had severall goods of the<br />
said Andrew Rands in his custodie, and this deponent verily beleeveth<br />
that there were tenn chests of sugar laden at Bahia for the said<br />
Andrew Rands accompt aboard the said shipp the ''Nostra Senora da Rosario''<br />
to be transported for Lisbone, and hee verily beleeveth the sae<br />
for the reasons aforesaid and for that hee hath nowe seene the bill<br />
of lading for the same, signed by the said Wheeler. And this deponent<br />
beleeveth they were consigned to the said Lagen, to the end to save<br />
them from the Sequestration which was ladid by the kinge of Portugall<br />
on the goods of the English. And otherwise hee cannot depose, saving<br />
hee heard the said Wheeler afterwards being put ashore in Portugall<br />
say that hee had bin taken with his said shipp and lading comming from<br />
Bahia for Lisbone by one Captaine Jourdanne in one of the frigots<br />
of this Commonwealth.
