The 16th day of february .1654. [CENTRE HEADING]

Keats and Jennings against ffrederick}
Chewne and others. Smith. Budd.}

Examined upon an Allegation exhibited the
5th of January 1654. on the behalfe of the said
Keats and Jennings./

Henry Hughes of deptford in the County of
Kent Roape Merchant aged 23. yeares or thereabouts.
a Wittnes sworne and examined:/

To the first Article of the said Allegation hee saith and deposeth, That the
Cotton woolls and goods arlate were delivered out at Porta fferara
arlate to George Norleigh ffactor and Agent to and for the arlate
Alderman fredericke Chewne and Companie, and upon such their delivery
by this deponent in the name and on the behalfe of Captaine George hughes this deponent
at and upon the command of the said Norleigh pretending Order from
his Principalls to that purpose, did, though with much reluctance, permitt the
same to be wweighed, and so delivered to the said factor, who refused to
receive the same upon any other termes. The premisses hee well knoweth as
being the person who delivered the said Merchandizes as abovesaid. And
further cannot depose./

To the second hee saith, That at the time of the weighing of the said goods
this deponent was not permitted to come neere the Stillyard where the same were
weighed, because that according to the Custome observed at Porta fferrara
no stranger is permitted to come neere the goods delivered into the Lazaretta
till such time as they have passed their full Purgation. And further cannot
depose/:-

To the third hee saith, That hee this deponent was present at and saw the
bringing out of the weights of the Stillyard wherewith the said Cottons and galls were
weighed, out of a warehouse in the said place of Lazaretta, the same then
lyeing upon the ground and being as this deponent saw and observed over=
growne with rust and very unfitting in this deponents Judgment for the exact
weighing of any goods or merchandizes whatsoever. And further cannot depose

To the 4th hee saith, That hee this deponent by the Credible relation of the
Pursers of the shipps the Mary Rose and William and Thomas (which
discharged their ladeings at Porta fferrara at one and the same time as
the Thomas Bonadventure) was informed, That Cotton woolls and galls
and other goods unladen out of the said respective shipps being weighed
at Porta fferrara, and afterwards conveied to
Leghorne, and there reweighed were found and observed to be of
much greater weight being weighed at Leghorne then when weighed
at Porta fferrara, and this deponents seeing and observing the weighing of
sewerall goods belonging to particular Merchants out of the said shipp
Thomas Bonadventure at Porta fferrara, and afterwards the
re=weighing thereof at Legorne, did thereby find, that the said goods
