''Hopewell'' was seized at Bengall as aforesaid she had<br />
on board her twenty five Negroes, and ten Tonnes<br />
of Elephants teeth, and a great part of her outward<br />
lading lay there in a Warehouse at Bengall undis=<br />
posed of which would have yeelded and produced about 400 Negroes more: All which foresaid Negroes and Teeth; and part<br />
of the said ships outward lading undisposed of as aforesaid<br />
were seized, surprized and taken away by the Governours<br />
of Angola and Bengall, or by their order and [?XXXX GUTTER]<br />
which he knoweth being Cooper of and on board the said ship<br />
the said time, and an eye witnes of the premisses./
Ad 2um. Arlum dicit et Deponit That every one of<br />
the foresaid twenty five Negroes would have yielded<br />
and produced the said time at Virginia the summe<br />
of thirty pounds sterling at least, or the value<br />
thereof in other Commodities, which he knoweth having<br />
since been at Virginia, and seen Negroes there<br />
usually sold for thirty pounds sterling and upwards per head<br />

Ad 3um Arlum dicit That the Governour of Angola<br />
(whose name this Deponent doth not now remember)<br />
did after surprizall of the ship ''Hopewell'' and her<br />
lading as aforesaid detaine and keepe all the said<br />
ships Company at Angola in prison or under<br />
restraint, and would not suffer them to come for<br />
England, except some few, who obtained leave<br />
to come away, and some who made their escape,<br />
And this deponent beleeveth that most of them are<br />
there still under restraint. Et alr nescit./
