depose saving that the said bale was there worth (according to the price then this<br />
deponent sold other of the same fustians that came therewith)

at the time of the Generall sequestration.}

and examined upon certain Interrogatories<br />
saith and deposeth by vertue of his<br />
oath as followeth.
To the first Interrogatorie hee saith and deposeth that hee this deponent<br />
was resident in Lisbone in the yeeres 1649. 1650. 1651 and 1652, in<br />
and during which space hee was imployed and intrusted by diverse<br />
English merchants as their factor, and had greate imployment from<br />
them in the way of factorage, and many and greate quantities of<br />
goods wares and merchandizes and of greate values were sent unto him<br />
by them and intrusted in his hands, and had likewise goods to a<br />
considerable valew for his owne accompt./
To the second and third Interrogatories hee saith that in the yeeres 1650 and 1651<br />
hee this deponent was at Lisbone kept in prison and under restraint<br />
by order of the said king eighteene monethes and upwards, at and<br />
during which time hee had sundrie debts owing unto him (for accompt<br />
of himselfe and imployers) by diverse merchants and others dwelling<br />
in Lisbone and other parts of the king of Portugalls dominion, (but<br />
especially in Lisbone) to the valewe of twenty thousand mil Res or<br />
thereabouts; And that upon this deponents seizure and imprisonment<br />
of this deponents person the said debts and summes were sequestred, and<br />
continued under the said sequestracon about eighteen monethes.<br />
And saith that many<br />
of the debts (which at the time of the first making of the said<br />
sequestration were reputed good) became bad and the persons owing them failed<br />
and became insolvent, and many of them [XXXX XXXXX XXXXX] then that the said sequestration was the cause thereof and all this deponents writings, bookes and<br />
papers being alsoe seized and taken away by the said kings officers, many of his bills for<br />
many of the said debts were embeazeld and lost during this deponents imprisonment, and others<br />
of the said debtors tooke that occasion to [?denie] payment and others died And saith that the Roll<br />
or schedule hereunto annexed and showed unto him at the time of his examination<br />
contayneth

containeth the severall debtors and debts which are become insolvent and bad and the names<br />
of such as have failed and of such as denie payment, and of such whose bills are lost, and the<br />
whole dammadge of the said losse in debts occasioned by the said sequestration, and saith the contents<br />
of the said schedule were and are true, and hee referreth himself thereof, and<br />
deposeth it to be made and taken as part of this his deposition. And saith that the<br />
greatest part of the said debts belonge to this deponents imployers or principalls.<br />
