aged 36 yeares or thereabouts a witnes sworne<br />
before the foresaid Comissioners and examined<br />
deposeth and saith as followeth.
To the first and second articles of the sayd allegation he saith he know well<br />
the sayd shipp ''Mary and John'' whereof ffrancis Hurdidge was Commander<br />
and was masters mate of her for three years and saith that the sayd<br />
Captaine Hurdidge in March 1648 English stile lett out the sayd shipp to<br />
ffreight att Lisboa having obtained a License from the King of Portugall<br />
to goe to Madera, Angola, Bahia thence back to Lisboa, and<br />
that in June 1649 she sett sayle from Lisboa and arrived att Angola<br />
about the beginning of the yeare 1650 and there the Governor<br />
seized the sayd Captaine and ymployed the sayd ship in the King<br />
of Portugalls service, and so kept her in that service for<br />
four monethes during which sayd four monethes this deponent<br />
was master of her and served in her. And further deposeth<br />
not.
To the third fourth fifth and sixth he saith that the Governor<br />
undertook to pay 600 millrees per moneth for the sayd shipps service<br />
but saith he did not performe the same but forced the sayd Captaine Hurdidge<br />
to take salt instead thereof att such rates that the sayd Hurdidges<br />
Owners suffered dammage thereby to the value of three hundred<br />
millrees att the least. And saith that besides the sayd four monethes<br />
twenty three days were spent att Angola before the sayd salt<br />
could be discharged and twenty dayes more in repairing the<br />
dammages done to the said shipp in the King of Portugalls service<br />
her Iron works being broke off from her sterne post and sayd post<br />
splitt and rudder broken off in the sayd service for the making<br />
good of which dammage a good summe of money was expended<br />
but how much he knoweth not, and saith that for the premisses noe<br />
allowance was made by the sayd Governor nor for the damage of<br />
the sayd 43 dayes the value whereof att the rate aforesayd<br />
amounteth to eight hundred millrees and upwards, over and besides<br />
the repaires aforesayd, the which by reason of the extraordinary<br />
dearth of all Commodities and men wages the worke continuing<br />
twenty days and a Millree per day per man being the usuall rate allowed<br />
to Carpenters Calkers Smithes, and other Artificers in that place<br />
did amount to a great value; And saith that the sayd Captaines<br />
detention at Angola for so long tyme videlicet upwards of five<br />
monethes could not Cost him less than three hundred millrees<br />
the premises he deposeth and came to know see and observe by his<br />
being att Angola with the sayd ship master and mate of her as<br />
aforesayd. And further deposeth not.
To the seventh he saith that the sayd shipp being so repaired<br />
receyved on board her att Angola one thousand one hundred and<br />
one Negroes the particular accompt for whom they all<br />
