To the first article of the said allegatio … To the first article of the said allegation hee saith and deposeth that<br />
hee well knoweth the shipp the ''Hope'' arlate (which hee hath<br />
lately seene lying in the River of Thames) and hath soe donne for these<br />
fourteene yeers last or thereaboute, and that shee<br />
about two yeeres since went from fflushing<br />
to Rochelle under the conduct of Michaell Johnsen (this deponents<br />
brother) as master thereof; and being at Rochell, this deponents said<br />
brother (her master) sold her to the ffrench, and as hee hath since often told<br />
this deponent and those that were her owners to the said [?XX GUTTER]<br />
of her sale have alsoe said and acknowledged as much to this deponent<br />
And further saith that his said brother having soe sold his said shipp [?to GUTTER]<br />
the ffrench who bought her laded her and put Peter<br />
Musselman (who went out Stiersman of her) to goe master of her<br />
in place of the said Michaell Johnsen, as this deponent hath heard<br />
both the said Michaell and the said Musselman and others often say<br />
And that the said shipp sailing from Rochell, was mett with and<br />
seized by the dunkirkers and carried to dunkirke and there made<br />
prize and confiscate to the subiects of the king of Spaine, as<br />
this deponent heard the said Peter Musselman (who was taken<br />
in her) say and affirme upon his retourne to fflushing<br />
and often since, and the same hee saith was and is publique and<br />
Notorious. And lastly hee deposeth that since the said seizure<br />
(which was about two yeeres since) the said shipp hath never (as hee<br />
verily beleeveth) bin at fflushing, for had shee bin there, hee this<br />
deponent (being a Skipper and dweller there) should (as hee beleeveth<br />
either have seene her or heard of her being there, which hee saith hee<br />
never did, but hee verily beleeveth that alwaies from [?the GUTTER]<br />
time of her said seizure, and putting the said Musselman out of [?her GUTTER]<br />
shee hath bin belonging to dunkirke. And otherwise hee cannot<br />
depose.

To the fourth and fifth articles of the said libell and two schedules or<br />
bills of Bottomrie annexed (nowe showed unto him) hee saith and<br />
deposeth that on or about the third of ffebruary 1653 hee this<br />
deponent was present and did see the arlate John Bacon signe<br />
seale and for his act and deede deliver the said two bills or schedules<br />
which being set downe hee this deponent as a witness set his name<br />
thereto as nowe appeareth, and the soe did John daniell and this<br />
deponents servant John Gibbs. And by this deponents name<br />
thereto hee well knoweth the said two bills to be the same<br />
without alteration that were soe signed sealed and delivered by the<br />
said John Bacon the time aforesaid. And otherwise hee cannot depose
