ready to sett sayle and was a tyte vessell, And further to this article hee cannot
depose saving his subsequent deposition.
To the 6th and 7th articles of the sayd allegation hee saith that hee knoweth that on
the sayd 20th day of december 1653 and for some tyme before and after the same the
winde stoode contrary videlicet South South West soe that it served not for a shipp to sayle out of the Port of
WEymouthj westwards and soe continued till about a weeke after this deponents arivall in the ''Saint John Baptist'' at Weymouth and saith that before the winde served for a shipp to sayle from
that Port westwards there came a generall impresse for sea men in the westerne parts of
England to serve in the shipps of this Commonwealth and there laye before
the Port of Weymouth on the 2 or 3 of January 1653 when this deponent arrived there and soe had done as this deponent heard on the sayd 20th of december 1653 and before divers shipps in
the omediate service of this Commonwealth as the ''hector'', the ''hound'', the [?''old''
''Warwick'', the ''Guinney ffrigott'', the ''Speaker'' and others And saith of his knowledge
the officers of the sayd shipps did after this deponents sayd arrivall at Weymouth impresse diverse sea men both on
shoare and in Merchants shipps to serve the Commonwealth and soe had done before this deponents sayd comming thither as hee heard which presse
continued till about the eighteenth of January 1653 old style during which
tyme the sayd Commonwealths shipps continued in Weymouth Roade) by reason
whereof mist sea men belongeing to shipps lying in that Roade, did forsake
their shipps and leave only two or three of their company on board their shipps and
the rest hidd them selves where they could to avoide pressing, and amongst the rest
the Company of the sayd shipp the ''John'' did of this deponents sight and knowledge all but the boatswaine and an other
forsake her and goe a shoare to hide them selves from being pressed, and this
deponent for his part was pressed by the Officers of the sayd shipps of this Commonwealth
three severall tymes betweene the sayd 20th of december 1653 and 18th of January next
from the tyme this deponent arrived there (as hee hath heard not from the sayd 20th of december 1653) till the 18th or 19th of January next after without great
hazard and danger to have all or most of her men taken out of her to serve in the
sayd shipps of this Commonwealth, and saith that the shipp the ''Saint''
''John Baptist'' of whose company this deponent was one durst not nor did stirr out
from the sayd Port of Weymouth by reason of all the sayd presse untill the 19th day of
January 1653 old style, neither did any other shipps sett sayle out of the sayd
Roade before the sayd 19th day of January (that this deponent knoweth of or
