Transcription The same day [CENTRE HEADING] Examined upThe same day [CENTRE HEADING] Examined upon the sayd allegation/ '''4us''' '''Stephen Tayler''' of the parish of Stepney in the County of Middlesex<br /> Mariner Gunner of the ship the ''Affrican ffrigott'' aged fifty<br /> yeares or thereabouts a witness sworne and examined saith and<br /> deposeth as followeth videlicet./ To the first article of the sayd allegation hee saith and deposeth that the arlate<br /> Isaac Woodgreene and Company in the moneths and tyme arlate in the yeares<br /> 1653 and 1654 had a Commission under the great seale of this high Court<br /> of Admiralty to man and sett out the ''Affrican ffrigott'' arlate as a private<br /> man of war to seize and surprize the shipps and goods of the ffrench<br /> King and his subiects And saith the sayd Woodgreene amd Company in pur=<br /> suance of the sayd designe did man and sett forth the sayd ffrigott accordingly<br /> the premises hee deposeth being with the sayd Woodgreene when hee procured<br /> the sayd Commission under the seale of the sayd Court and alsoe goeing his<br /> Gunner in the sayd ffrigott during the whole voyage in question and<br /> having heard the sayd Commission read on board the sayd ffrigott And<br /> further hee cannot depose./ To the second article of the sayd allegation hee saith that the sayd Woodgreene<br /> in his sayd ship the ''Affrican ffrigott'' did in or about the latter end<br /> of March last upon the high and open seas neere the Island of Scio<br /> meete with and take a certaine ship called the ''Madam Guardiana''<br /> which was at her seizure manned with French men and wore the french<br /> Colours and was reputed to be a ffrench ship and this deponent hath heard<br /> divers English men resident at Smirna who understood French saye that<br /> the mariners of the sayd ship ''Madam Guardiana'' did before them acknow<br /> ledge and confesse that the sayd ship and her ladeing did belonge to<br /> ffrenchmen of Marselles subiects of the King of ffrance And hee alsoe<br /> saith the sayd Woodgreene having soe seized the sayd ship went therewith<br /> for Smirna having occasion soe to doe the better to provide him selfe with<br /> provision of victuals which hee stood neede of and for other occasions, and<br /> saith that after the sayd ship came thither the arlate Peter Martyne the<br /> Master of her and all the Mariners got on shoare and got them selves shippt<br /> into other shipps belonging to ffrance then lying there by meanes<br /> whereof the sayd Woodgreene could not bring any of them to England<br /> here to be examined And further hee cannot depose not knowing of the<br /> sayd Woodgreene his making any addresses to the ffrench Consull there to<br /> the effect arlate./ To the third and 4th articles of the sayd allegation hee saith the ship ''Madam''<br /> ''Guardiana'' at her seizure was and is a ffrench built ship and was<br /> manned with ffrench men And further saving his foregoeing depositions to which<br /> hee referrerth hee cannot depose not knowing or being present at the sayd Martyne his<br /> subscribing the schedule arlate nor knowing what hee confessed afore to the English Consull at<br /> Smirna./ signed [?XXX]<br /> Stephen '''ST''' Taylor [MARKE, RH SIDE]; Stephen '''ST''' Taylor [MARKE, RH SIDE]  +
