... That about three yeares since he was one of the quarter masters
of the arlate shipp the ''Little Neptune'' in a voyage made by her to New
England and from thence to the Canaryes, and the butter Suffolke cheese
part of the pease and all the oat meale laden abord the said shipp for her provision
in that voyage were naughte and ill conditioned and nott fitt to be eaten by any
men or to be caryed to sea in any shipp, reddens racieum scien sua
he sayeth that the sayd butter was soe rancke, that theu could not eate it
with bread or fish, unlesse it were fryed with some of the best of it which was in the middle of the casks and
some of the sayd butter was soe badd that none of her companye or
passengers could eate it, soe that they tallowed the masts with that which
laye next the casks it beinge fitt for noe other use but to be used
as tallowe, and the foresayd Suffolke chease was quite rotten and
had in it many wett springs or places which stuncke very much
and the rest of it was soe hard and drye that they could not eate it,
but heaved a great part of it over bord, and that one barrell of the
sayd pease was reasonable good, but the other barrell of pease was
soe hard that they were boyled never soe longe they would continue soe
hard that the company could scarce eat them, and all the oat meale was
soe mustye that unlesse they had been forced to eat it of want of other
provision they could not have eaten it, and that he hath heard the gunner
of the sayd shipp often complayne in the sayd voyage that the
powder abord the sayd shipp was very badd and was soe small and
ould that it had very ltttle strength in it, and would not fire well
nor give a good reporte, but would furr the ordenance very much
