Transcription Arthur Perkins her master, and arived in tArthur Perkins her master, and arived in the safety with the said<br /> lading on board her in the port of Bengall on the coast of<br /> Africa in or about the month of June 1658. Which he knoweth<br /> for that he arrived there in her. Et alr nescit deponit. Ad 4um Arlum dicit et deponit That on the very next day<br /> on some other shorte tyme after the said ships arrivall<br /> at Bengall afosesaid there was a treaty had betweene the<br /> Governor of Bengall (whose name this deponent doth not<br /> well remember) and the foresaid Master of the ''Hopewell'', and<br /> Mr Jenkins his man (who went supra cargo of the said<br /> ship the said voyage) concerning the trucking of the whole<br /> ships lading for Negroes and Elephants teeth; during which<br /> Treaty he saith the foresaid Governor of Bengall and the Governor<br /> of Angola combined togeather about seizing the ''Hopewell''<br /> and her lading, and accordingly two ships were sent from Angola<br /> (by the Governor of the said place) both manned with Portugeses<br /> some of them seamen and others land soliders, who came<br /> armed, and in a violent and hostile manner seized the said ship<br /> ''Hopewell'' in the port of Bengall, and also fetcht away<br /> The most past of her lading, which was put into a warehouse<br /> at Bengall (in order to the trucking the same away as aforesaid)<br /> and carried both the ship and lading to Angola, where<br /> they disposed thereof at their pleasure and utterly deprived<br /> and dispoiled the said Jefferys and Company thereof to their<br /> very great losse and damage, the whole designe of the<br /> voyage being thereby overthrone, which he knoweth for<br /> he was an eye witnes therefore, and carried as a prisoner<br /> on board and of the said Portugall ships to Angola, whereby<br /> this deponent and the rest of the ''Hopewells'' Company were [?XXXX GUTTER]<br /> ashore and put to shift for themselves.
