Transcription John ffernandez De Viera to this deponent'John ffernandez De Viera to this deponent's best remembrance<br /> soone after the said Notice given of the ''hopewells'' being<br /> at Bengall sent two ships of warr one having 32 peeces of<br /> Ordnance, and the other about 14: very strongly mannd<br /> to Bengall to seize upon the ''hopewell'', which they<br /> did accordingly in a hostile and Trecherous manner<br /> and fetched most of the goods that were ashore,<br /> and not bartered away, aboard the said men of warr,<br /> and carried the same together with the ''hopewell'' and<br /> all her Negroes and Teeth and what she had on board her, to Angola, and<br /> utterly dispoyled and deprived the said Jenkin[?s] and Company<br /> of both of the said said ship and Lading, to their great<br /> losse and damage and overthrowe of the voyage: which<br /> hee knoweth being on board the said ship ''hopewell''<br /> when shee was seized, and carried in her to Angola<br /> where hee, and all the said Ships Company were<br /> turned ashore to shift for themselves, as well as they<br /> could and further cannot depose./: To the 5th hee saith that hee verily beleeveth that the said Outward Lading carried in the said ship to Bengall<br /> would there have produced and procured above six<br /> hundred Negroes, And further cannot depose to this<br /> article./. To the 6th hee saith hee cannot depose not being able<br /> to Estimate the worth of the said ship./. To the 7th hee saith that both the said Governour of<br /> Bengall and the Governour of Angola are Portugall[?s]<br /> or of some place in the Dominions of the King of Portugall and his Subjects and were put in<br /> Governours there by order of the said King of Portugall<br /> as this Deponent hath credibly heard and verily beleeveth<br /> and saith that the said Governour[?s] did well knowe<br /> that the said ship ''hopewell'' and her Goods did belong<br /> to English men and subjects of this Commonwealth<br /> of England, And saith that there was the said time<br /> and alsoe before, and ever since Peace and Amity<br /> betweene England and Portugall./. To the 8th and 9th hee saith that the said Jenkins and Company<br /> the Owners of the said ship and Lading have sustained very<br /> Great losse and dammage by the said unjust seizure of the<br /> said ship, but howe much hee cannot Estimate. And<br /> further saving as aforesaid deposeth not, saving that<br /> Bengall and Angola are in the Dominion of the King of<br /> Portugall../.
