Captaines hee saith with their sayd men of … Captaines hee saith with their sayd men of warr carried the sayd<br />
shipp ''Mary and Joyce'' with all the sayd seaven pipes of wine (and other her<br />
ladeing) aboard her into the Groyne in Galisea, and the sayd Stafford the<br />
Master and William Warren the Supracargo and this deponent and divers other<br />
of the Company of the ''Mary and Joyce'' were carried prizoners<br />
to the Groyne And further to those articles hee cannot depose<br />
for that hee was gone from the Groyne before the wines aforesayd or<br />
part of them were taken out of the ''Mary and Joyce'' and put aboard the ''Elizabeth'' and sawe not any<br />
of them laden either aboard the ''Elizabeth'' or any other shipp nor ever [?sawe]<br />
any of the wines soe seized in the ''Mary and Joyce'', since the tyme of such<br />
their seizure./
To the 7th article of the sayd allegation hee saith hee hath well<br />
knowne the arlate Phillip Stafford for those two yeares last past and<br />
saith during that tyme the sayd Phillip hath lived and doth live in the parish<br />
of Saint Olave Southwarke and is commonly reputed to be an English<br />
man borne and a subiect of this Commonwealth and such this<br />
deponent verily beleeveth him to bee And further to this article<br />
hee cannot depose./
To the 8th hee saith that the seaven pipes of wine by him predeposed<br />
of were really provided laden and put aboard the ''Mary and Joyce'' at the<br />
Canaries by the arlate Phillip Stafford and for his Accompt<br />
this hee knoweth for the reasons in his foregoeing deposition declared<br />
And verily beleeveth and is perswaded in his conscience that the sayd<br />
Phillip Stafford did and doth runne the sole hazard of the sayd<br />
seaven pipes of wynes, and that since the provideing and ladeing of<br />
them aboard the sayd shipp noe subiect of the King of Spaine had<br />
or hath any right or interest in any of them And further hee<br />
cannot depose./
To the last hee saith his foregoing deposition is true./
To the Interrogatories on the behalfe of his highnes<br />
the Lord Protector./ [CENTRE HEADING]
To the first Interrogatorie hee saith hee was Boatswaine of<br />
the ''Mary and Jo[?yce]'' the voyage in question And saith hee is an<br />
Englishman borne at East Ruston in the County of Norfolke and<br />
is a subiect of the Commonwealth of England And to the rest<br />
of the Interrogatorie hee answereth negatively./
To the 2 hee saith hee hath knowne Phillip Stafford Interrogated for these<br />
two yeares last past and that hee hath lived in the parish of Saint Olaves<br />
Southwarke as aforesayd during his knowledge of him saveing at such<br />
tymes as hee was at Sea as Master of the ''Mary and Joyce'' And further<br />
hee cannot answere./
To the 3 Interrogatorie hee saith hee knoweth that the Interrogate Phillip<br />
Stafford did buy the wines by him predeposed of at the Canaries in<br />
exchange of other goods as hydes and waxe and other Commodities which<br />
the sayd Stafford brought from Barbary as the proceeds of the goods by<br />
him laden at London, this deponent delivering the<br />
