On the behalfe of Albert Lemmerman}<br /> and others of Amsterdam touching the}<br /> ''Saint Jacob'', Arent Marinis master.} '''John Harris''' of Rie in the County<br /> of Sussex Mariner, aged 60 yeeres<br /> or thereabouts sworne and exámined. To the first Interrogatorie hee saith and deposeth that the<br /> shipp the ''Saint Jacob'' interrogated laden with tobacco, sugar,<br /> sumack, and elephants teeth and other goods arived<br /> about fifteene monethes since neere Arundell in Sussex where<br /> her master and company were forced to run her (having sprung<br /> a leake) ashore, which hee knoweth seeing her before and after<br /> such her comming ashore, and saith her master was commonly<br /> called Arent Marinis. To the second and third hee saith that upon the said running of the said<br /> shipp a ground neere the place a foresaid the said master and<br /> most of his company came ashore and used every meanes and<br /> diligence for preservation of her and her lading, and the next morning began<br /> to take goods out of her, and provided boates and carts to carry<br /> away the said shipps lading to preserve and lay it up<br /> for the owners use, which hee knoweth being one of those that were<br /> imployed therein by the said master, and helping to take out some<br /> of the said goods. And saith that while the said master and company<br /> with the help they had got were the said next morning actually<br /> taking out of goods from the said shipp for their preservation, and<br /> had carts and boates by the said shipps side readie to carry them away,<br /> one called mr howe (said to be steward to the earle of Arundell)<br /> came downe to the said place to the shipps side, and this deponent<br /> speaking to him and saying, hee thought the best anchor and<br /> cable were due to my lord of Arundell for groundage, to which the<br /> said mr howe answered and said, if the best anchor and cable are<br /> due to my lord, the whole shipp and lading are due to him, and<br /> therefore I seize upon all, or words to the same effect, And<br /> otherwise hee cannot depose. To the fourth hee saith that upon the said howes first comming<br /> the said master being aboard, went by this deponents advise<br /> ashore to speake to him to be a meanes to protest the shipp and lading,<br /> but what hee said unto him, this examinate knoweth not, for hee<br /> staid aboard and went not ashore with the master, but before<br /> the said masters going ashore hee called out of the said shipp to the<br /> said mr howe and told him hee should have the best anchor and cables<br /> howbeitbest anchor and cables<br /> howbeit  +
