and County of Middlesex Mariner one of the Company and a<br />
Midshipp man of the Shipp the ''Vine'' aged twenty five yeares<br />
or thereabouts a wittnes sworne and examined saith and<br />
deposeth
That the shipp the ''Vine'' of London (James Barker Master) about the<br />
latter end of December 1654 sett sayle from Gravesend bound on a<br />
voyage to the East Indies and this deponent went a Midshipp man in her,<br />
and John May went Masters Mate and Pylott of her the sayd voyage<br />
outward bound, but the sayd May left her at her arrivall at Meslipatam<br />
in the East Indies, there having bin frequent fallings out and differences<br />
in the sayd shipps outward voyage betwixt the said Master and the sayd<br />
May: And saith that there was in the moneth of June 1655 a great difference<br />
and dissention betwixt the sayd Master and the sayd May touching a Compasse<br />
hee this deponent (as this deponent hath heard by others of the sayd shipps<br />
Company) but this deponent being a sleepe in his Cabbin when the sayd<br />
differense about the sayd Compasse happened, hee this deponent cannot<br />
speake anything of his knowledge touching the same, but saith that<br />
about three or fower dayes after the same happened, the sayd May came<br />
to this deponent and told him this or the like in effect that by reason of difference betwixt the<br />
said Master and him hee did beleeve the sayd Master would proceede<br />
to bring him to the Capsterne and punish him and asked this deponent whether<br />
hee (if the Master should soe proceede) would assiste him the sayd May<br />
to free him from punishment and told him that Swinburne the Boatswaine<br />
and diverse others of the sayd shipps Company had promised to stand by him the sayd May and assiste him<br />
that none should meddle with him but the sayd Master, And hee<br />
further sayeth that after the sayd May had soe desired this deponents<br />
assistance as is before declared, the sayd May being standing by the<br />
Bitts of the sayd shipp accompanied with this deponent and this<br />
precontest Daniell harman and the sayd Swinburne the Boateswaine,<br />
the sayd May entered into discourse concerning wages, and sayd<br />
the sayd Master had denyed him his wages, and sayd that if they<br />
this deponent and the sayd harman and Swinburne would bee<br />
ruled by him<br />
hee knew there was money sufficient and more in the Stearne sheates to pay<br />
him and them their wages and that<br />
they would pay them selves their due out of<br />
it whereto the sayd Boatswaine<br />
replyed that it was better to lett it rest and doe nothing therein till<br />
they came at Meslepotam whether the shipp was to goe, and then hee the sayd<br />
Boatswaine could pick a boates Crue to carrie the Marchants and Master<br />
on shoare, and then they might and would pay them selves out of that<br />
money and soe goe on shoare and leave the sayd shipp or words to that effect,<br />
whereto the sayd daniell harman speaking to the sayd May in behalfe of himselfe and this deponent sayd<br />
