A businesse of exámination of witnesses}<br />
on the behalf of William Coxeter Merchant}<br />
and owner of the shipp called the ''Mary''}<br />
of London lading seized by three}<br />
subiects of the king of Spain}<br />
Clements.
Examined upon an allegation given<br />
in on behalf of the said<br />
Coxeter the 11th instant.

of Surrey Mariner, aged 25 yeares or<br />
therereabouts sworne and exámined
To the first and second árticles hee saith and deposeth that hee well<br />
knew the shipp the ''Mary'' of London arlated (sic) and was master of her<br />
the voyage mentioned in the said allegation, and saith there proceeded<br />
from this port about a yeare since laden with tobaccoe and<br />
pipestaves and some other lading bound for the valley of the Gasti<br />
in the Land of Teneriff, and was there to retourne for this port,<br />
and saith there on or about the 21th of October last there arived<br />
with the said goods and came to an anchor at the said place in the<br />
said Iland within the Dominions of the king of Spaine, and<br />
saith that the next day after such their comming to an anchor, there<br />
came a frigot of the said kings aboard and by the violence and force tooke<br />
and seized the said shipp the ''Mary'', and all her said lading, and tooke<br />
their deponent and company all out and carried them ashore and put<br />
there in prison, and alsoe imprisoned the said Coxeter who was gonne<br />
ashore beforehand, nor knowing of any warrs; And saith the said<br />
shipp the ''Mary'' with her tackle apparell and furniture and guns<br />
with the most part of her lading were at the time of the said seizure<br />
belonging to the said William Coxeter and were well worth the summe<br />
of fifteene hundred pounds sterling./ and saith the said Coxeter was the<br />
owner of the said shipp and constituted this deponent master of her
To the third hee saith that by the said seizure and defeate of the said<br />
voyage and the losse of five hundred pounds which the said William<br />
had there ashore as this deponent was credibly informed, (the said William<br />
having there resided) the said William Coxeter hath suffered losse<br />
and dammage to the summe and valewe of three thousand pounds<br />
at the least in this deponents estimation the said Coxeter being<br />
not only owner but alsoe the Imployer of her the said voyage

a yeare since, laden with Tobacco, pipestaves, strong water<br />
and other goods bound for for the valley de Gasti in the Iland of Teneriff<br />
there to discharge, and saith the producent William Coxeter<br />
