Transcription The fourth of January 1655. [CENTRE HEADINThe fourth of January 1655. [CENTRE HEADING] A businesse of redeeming and saving of a certaine}<br /> shipp called the ''Hope'' of Quinsborowe and}<br /> her lading et cetera promoted by Edmund Hempson}<br /> and others against Beniamin Harrison}<br /> and William harrington.} Examined upon an allegation given in on<br /> the behalfe of the said Hampson and<br /> others, the second of this instant. '''Rp. 1''' '''Seth Thurston''' of Wivenho in Essex ffisherman<br /> aged 20ty yeares or thereaboutes a witnes<br /> produced sworne and Examined deposeth as followeth On the first article of the said allegation hee deposeth and saith that Edmond<br /> hempson William Scotcher James warden, Valentine hudson and John Mortimer<br /> arlate were commonly knowne reputed and taken to be masters and<br /> owners of five severall hoys or vessells as is arlate dureing all thetyme<br /> arlate, which this deponent knoweth having sayled any tyme these 3. monethes<br /> last past with James Wardell one of the sayd masters arlate, and knoweing what<br /> hee hath deposed to be true. And further cannot depose./ To the second article of the said allegation hee sith and deposeth that in or about<br /> the 16th day of december last past, the alate hampson Scotcher wardell<br /> hudson and Mortimer being in their severall hoys att sea came to a place called the<br /> Swin off of the Coast of Essex, and there found a vessell or shipp since knowne to bee<br /> the ''hope'' of Quinborrow in a sinkeing and perishing condition, haveing 4 Inches<br /> water on her upper deck[?e], haveing neither man nor cat or any other livinge<br /> creature on board her, haveing alsoe her hatches washed over board, before the said<br /> masters came to her And hee saith the said Masters arlate and all their companies did<br /> presently use theire endeavors to save the said ''hope'' of Quinborrow from Utter loose[?ing]<br /> and towed her off that place with very much labor and great hazard of<br /> their vessells and men, unto a place called Grays where the [?foresaid] vessell now [?remayneth] [#] [# LH MARGIN]<br /> [?which] is att least 50 miles from<br /> [?the ?place] where they towed her where by<br /> the said 5. masters and Companys did preserve the vessell the ''hope'' of Quinborrow<br /> from utterly perishinge in the sea of this deponents knowledge, who was<br /> then on board James Wardells vessell as a common man, and did see and knowe the<br /> premisses as hee hath deposed. and further cannot day./ To the third article of the said allegation hee cannot depose./ To the fourth article of the said allegation hee saith and deposeth that in and about<br /> the saveing of the ''hope'' of Quinborrow arlate Edmond hampson one of the said<br /> Masters did loose his skiffe, which in this deponents judgement was worth 4 ''li''<br /> sterling. Andfurther saith that the said 5 Masters did in this deponents iudgement<br /> loose , dureing the tyme of theire seizeing and carryeing the said shipp the ''hope'' of<br /> Quinborrow to Grays) att least twenty pounds sterling per hoy as fish [?fell] out<br /> att that tyme and further cannot depose./ To the fifth article of the said allegation hee saith the ''hope'' of Quinborrows<br /> arlate was laden the tyme arlate with Hempe Clapboard and oares. and<br /> further cannot depose. To the 6th hee cannot depose To the last hee saith and deposeth that his former deposition for the reasons<br /> by hin predeposed was and is true and further cannot day./ REpeated before doctor Godolphin.
