not soe good there as at Amsterdam, the goods may goe next wayes to<br />
Amsterdam in the shipp (the said shipp being homeward bound) and<br />
it is usuall that they write to their factors at Roane to that purpose,<br />
and in this consideration alone hee beleeveth it was that the goods<br />
were consigned for Amsterdam, the premisses hee deposeth being<br />
a marchant borne at Lisbone, and well acquainted with the manner<br />
of the trade, and consignement there and thence. And otherwise hee cannot<br />
depose.
To the eighth article hee saith and deposeth that hee well knoweth all<br />
the persons arlate said to be inhabitants of Lisbone, and saith they were<br />
and are Portugeses and dwellers at Lisbone, (where this deponent hath<br />
bin with them), and subiects of the kinge of Portugall and for<br />
such commonly accompted and reputed, this deponent having personally<br />
knowne them theise twelve yeares last, and saith the time arlate<br />
the arlate Marcus [?Vellose], ffrancisco [?Carles], Antonio [?Correa]<br />
Bravo, domingo da Selva, and Juan Gonsales da Britto were<br />
and are the factors agents and correspondents of the said [?Jereonimo] Nunez<br />
da Costa and for such commonly accompted, which hee knoweth hee<br />
this deponent corresponing in the way of merchandize with the said<br />
[?Jeronimo] Nunez da Costa, and alsoe with the said other persons as<br />
his factor. And otherwise hee cannot depose.
To the nineth article of the said allegation hee saith and deposeth that<br />
hee alsoe well knoweth Alfons[?e] Suarez and hath soe donne for theise<br />
tenn yeares last or thereabouts, and saith hee was and is alsoe he<br />
factor and correspondant of the said Jeronimo Nunez da Costa and<br />
was and is a Portugese borne and liveth in Roane only as a merchant<br />
stranger and factor for Portugeses by whom hee was and is<br />
imployed, which hee knoweth this deponent being alsoe a Portugese<br />
and having bin at Roane, and there seeing him as a factor doe the<br />
businesses of the said da Costa, and for such as aforesaid hee saith<br />
hee the said Suarez was and is commonly accompted and reputed. And<br />
otherwise hee cannot depose.
To the tenth article hee saith and deposeth that before the twentieth<br />
of June last and the seizure of the said shipp the ''Thirstie hart'' and<br />
her lading the said Jeronimo Nunez da Costa from Amsterdam<br />
wrote to this deponent advising him that hee had given order for the<br />
lading of severall quantities of sugars and merchandizes at<br />
Lisbone aboard the said shipp, and ordered and desired this deponent<br />
that in case the said shipp and lading should happen to be seized<br />
by any of the shipps of this Commonwealth, hee this deponent would<br />
looke after it and ckaime or cause such merchandizes as should be laden<br />
aboard for his the said Jeronimo his accompt to be claimed for the said<br />
Jeronimo, and this deponent received the said letters before the said<br />
20th of June 1655 and before the seizure arlate, and this deponent<br />
hath heard his precontest Mr ffernandez say that hee had also ereceived<br />
order to the same effect. And otherwise hee cannot depose.
