same for tobaccoe's and sugars, which shee was to bring to Amsterdam, ans saith<br />
that thither shee was going with them, but comming about the height of 46<br />
or 47 degrees of Northern latitude, shee met with such stormie and tempetuous<br />
weather that her maine mast broke by the board, and shee neere to perishing,<br />
so that this deponent and companie (her victualls alsoe failing) were forced to gie<br />
with her for Nantes, where hee attended about a moneth or six weekes<br />
for order from the said Peter [?Poulle] what hee should doe, and at length<br />
hee sent order that the said shipp should discharge at Nantes, which shee<br />
accordingly did, and that was in or about Aprill last, and having dischardged<br />
this deponent went over land to deepe to see his wife and children<br />
from whom hee had bin longe absent, and shortly after his commong thither<br />
hee received order from the said Peter [?Poulle] to retourne to the shipp<br />
and take in [?slats] and other goods for Roane, where there should be<br />
another caargo provided for him to be brought home to Amsterdam, and<br />
this deponent went and tooke in the said [?slat] tobaccoe and sope accordingly,<br />
being the same that was seized in her.
To the sixth hee saith hee beleeveth that halfe the said sope and halfe<br />
the said tobaccoe was and is belonging to ffrench men living in<br />
Nantes, subiects of the ffrench king, for being at the house of the factor<br />
of the said Mr [?Poulle] there residing, hee understood soe much, seeing the<br />
said ffrench men with him and hearing their discourse to that purpose, but<br />
the rest of the said tobacooes and sope and the said [?slats] belong as hee<br />
beleeveth to the said Peter [Poulle]. And saith that hee and all his company<br />
are ffrench men, the dutch not daring to goe in the said voyage to Brazil. And<br />
otherwise hee cannot depose.
To the seaventh hee saith hee had noe papers aboard but there were bills of<br />
lading for the said halfe of the tobaccoe and halfe of the sope That were for ffrench men signed which were sent over land for Roane,<br />
and saith there were noy any Papers torne throwne over board or otherwise made away that<br />
hee knoweth of. And otherwise hee cannot answer, [?saying] there was noe<br />
Charter partie made. amd saving that the said bills wer signed by<br />
Mr [?Roze] the factor, this deponent refusing to signe them,/
