Stepney Mariner aged thirty three yeares or thereabouts<br />
a witnes sworne and examined saith and deposeth<br />
as followeth videlicet,/
To the first article of the sayd allegation hee saith that hee this deponent<br />
was Boatswaine of the arlate Shipp the ''Exeter Merchant'' in her last<br />
voyage, which shee began from this Port of London about the moneth of<br />
June or July 1654 and saith that then the arlate Roger hatton<br />
and others his Company were commonly reputed the true and lawfull<br />
Owners and Proprietors of the sayd shipp her tackle apparrell and<br />
furniture And soe still are reputed And that the arlate Thomas Woodfin<br />
during the sayd tyme was and went Master and Commander of her during<br />
the sayd voyage and still is Master of her, and was made Master of her by<br />
the sayd Mr hatton and other her Owners (as hee this deponent beleeveth)<br />
And saith hee hath knowne the sayd Woodfin only since about June or July<br />
1654 and hath in the sayd voyage observed that hee the sayd Woodfin<br />
did caarefully and well performe his office of Master of the sayd vessell<br />
like an able and expert seaman, and for an able and experienced Seaman<br />
the sayd Woodfin is commonly reputed And further hee cannot depose/
To the second third and 5th articles of the sayd allegation hee saith and deposeth that<br />
the sayd shipp the ''Exeter Merchant'' in or about the ffirst of May last<br />
returned from Zant and Cadiz to this port of London with a ladeing of<br />
Currance and Varina Tobaccoe, and the sayd Thomas Woodfin being<br />
then arrived in the River of Thames endeavoured to bring her to an Anchor<br />
