witnes sworne and examined saith and deposeth as followeth
To the first article of the sayd allegation hee saith hee hath well knowne the<br />
arlate Thomas Woodfin for these twelve yeares last past and saith, during his<br />
knowledgew of him hee hath bin comonly reputed an able seaman, and saith<br />
hee hath bin commonly reputed Master of the ''Exeter Merchant'' arlate during eight yeares<br />
of that tyme And further to this article hee cannot depose
To the second article of the said allegation hee saith hee knoweth well<br />
the shipp the ''Exeter Merchant'' came laden<br />
unto the Lower chayne at Lymehouse in or about the moneth of May last the<br />
tyme more certainly hee doth not now remember and saith at her<br />
commeing thither the arlate shipp the ''ffrancis and Mary'' laye fastned to the<br />
sayd chayne with a Cable, and the sayd Woodfins company or some of them (hee not being aboard) desyred the<br />
arlate Smith that they might (according as the usuall Custome is for shipps<br />
that come laden in) fasten a hawser to the sayd shipp the ''ffrancis and''<br />
''Mary'' and rest thereby for a tyde till they could come to fasten to the sayd<br />
chayne but the sayd Smith told them the sayd Woodfins company hee had goods to come on board and that they should not make fast to his shipp refused to let them fasten thereto and threw off<br />
the hawser they were about to fasten to her, which done the sayd Woodfin came<br />
presently after from shoare in a wherry and went on board the ''ffrancis and''<br />
''Mary'' this deponent seeing him soe doe and desyred (as this deponent hath heard) that the sayd Smith would (according as the usuall Custome is forladen shipps to doe) suffer him to fasten<br />
a hawser to his the sayd Smiths cable and an other to his<br />
boltspritt or some other parte of his shipp and to ride thereby till the tyde which was then neere upon high<br />
water were abated that soe hee might fasten to the chayne when it was lowe<br />
