came directly aboard the vessell ''Success … came directly aboard the vessell ''Successe'' and brake her bowe downe to
the very water and soe shattered and spoiled her with the blowe shee gave
her by soe running against her that shee sunke soone after and perished in the sea
both shee and sayd ladeing of Coales and all her tackle and furniture and provisions
and the Mariners cloathes all save what they had on their backs and this deponents cloathes Instruments and other things aboard her And saith that hee this deponent
and company before their sayd vessell the ''Successe'' soe sunke seeing the eminent
danger they were in did crye out to the Company of the sayd shipp ''dove'' to
helpe them of the ''Successe'' to save their lives, but the Company of the shipp ''dove''
noe witt regarded their crye but hold on their course and sayled away without
speaking any word to any of the ''Successe'' her Company or any (save one
man which after the blowe given to the ''Successe'' by the ''dove'' stopt up upon the
fforecastle of the ''dove'' but answered not a word) soe much as appearing upon
the decks of the ''dove'', which they did (as this deponent beleeveth that they
might the better escape unknowne and that if the company of the ''Successe'' were
all drowne it might never be knowne who did the sayd mischeife and were
the cause thereof, which this deponent and Company perceiving presently betooke
them selves to their boate (and soe through Gods mercie saved themselves
therein but the vessell ''Successe'' with her ladeing and all things else therein within
a shorte space after this deponent and Company were gott into their boate
sunke downe and perished in the sea by reason of the blow shee receaved as
aforesayd from the ''dove'' And saith that after this deponent and company had
continued in their sayd boate (rowing and keeping her head upon the sea that
shee might not be full of water) by the space of three howers without either meate
drinke or fresh water to preserve them in case they could light of noe assistance, it
pleased God that a hoye or vessell belonging to a place called [?Soule] (the vessells name
hee knoweth not) but saith the Master of her was called John Wiggs, being bound to
Newcastle and seeing this deponent and company in such distresse and danger of being
cast away tooke compassion of them and tooke him this deponent and company into the
sayd hoy or vessell and brought them to Sheilds neere Newcastle And further
to these articles hee cannot depose saving his subsequent deposition/
To the 6th and 7th articles hee saith that hee this deponent and Company did
in the sayd hoye or vessell arrive safe at Sheilds neere Newcastle upon the 11th day
of August last, and saith that this deponent and the sayd John Wiggs tooke a
wherry the same day and went up therein to Newcastle and goeing by Jarra Key
which is neere Newcastle this deponent there sawe the ''dove'' in this suite complayned
of lying on the outside of the other shipps there and a carpenter then at worke
upon her bowe and sawe shee had then her bowe dubbed the better to
see what hurte shee had receaved with the blowe shee made when she runne
against the ''Successe'' aforesayd when shee sunke the same, which repayre and dubbing
the sayd shipp the ''dove'' would not have needed if shee had not runne against
the ''Successe'' in manner predeposed and thereby hurt her the sayd ''doves'' bowe And
hee saith that hee this deponent did observe and soe did his precontest
Andrew Cristi and others of the Company of the ''Successe'' that the shipp that runne
against the ''Successe'' and sunke her in manner predeposed had then when shee soe did the
same the picture of an Angell in her head and of a ''dove'' in her sterne and soe the shipp ''dove'' in this
suitee shipp ''dove'' in this
