last past and before [xxxx] or since the 14th of July last about which tyme the<br />
shipp the ''Angell Gabriell'' sett sayle from Gravesend on the voyage in question the<br />
arlate Henry Southwood was Commonly reputed to be the Master and Commander<br />
of the sayd shipp ''Angell Gabriell'' and to be soe constitutes and made Master of<br />
her by the Owners thereof, and had by them committed to him the care and charge as Master of<br />
her for the voyage in question (which was from London to Druntam arlate and<br />
from thence back to the Downes) and this deponent goeing Gunner of the sayd<br />
voyage well knoweth the sayd Henry Southwood did goe master<br />
of the sayd shipp the sayd voyage and took charge of her as Master of her during<br />
the same And further saving his subsequent deposicion hee cannot depose.
To the second hee saith that before the sayd shipp her goeing out<br />
upon her voyage in question the arlate Henry Southwood<br />
stood neede of a pilott to conduct the sayd shipp in her sayd voyage and<br />
that the sayd arlate Richard Fare did shipp himselfe with the sayd Master to<br />
goe as Pylott of her the sayd voyage, but for what summe hee knoweth not,<br />
not being present at the contract made betweene the sayd Master and the sayd Fare<br />
but hath heard the sayd Fare was to have ten pounds for his paines in<br />
pyloting the say shipp the sayd voyage, and that hee received 10 L thereof<br />
in hand before hee went the voyage, And saith the sayd Fare had charge<br />
of the sayd shipp and her ladeing as Pilot thereof committed to him by the sayd<br />
Henry Southwood for the say voyage accordingly tooke the same upon him And further saving<br />
this following deposicion hee cannot depose./
To the third hee saith the sayd Richard Fare as to outward appearance<br />
is a very aged man and hee hathe heard the same Fare says that by reason<br />
of his age his hearing is much impaired and that hee cannot heare soe well<br />
as formerly hee could and this deponent being one of the sayd shipps Company<br />
knoweth hee the sayd Fare wanteth an eye and well before that hee did<br />
not performe his office and duty off a pylott in the sayd shipp as hee<br />
ought to doe the voyage in question And further hee cannot depose saving<br />
his subsequent deposicion./
To the 4th and 5th and 6th articles of the sayd libell hee saith that the sayd Fare was<br />
soe unskillfull in the duty of a pylott for the sayd voyage that in the passage<br />
of the sayd shipp ''Angell Gabriell'' from the River of Thames upon the voyage<br />
in question shee coming among certaine sands in the Swim on this side Orphord<br />
Nesse the sayd Ricchard Fare was at a stand and knew not the course to<br />
shape to avoide running upon the sayd sands for that had not the sayd Henry<br />
Southwood and his shipps company bin better skilled in passing the sayd sands<br />
then the sayd Fare and for the better preservation of the sayd shipp and their owne<br />
lives, directed and shaped the sayd shipps course whilst shee was among<br />
the sayd sands shee had in all probabillity perished in them And he further<br />
saith that after the sayd shipp was by Gods blessing on the industrie of the sayd master and<br />
Company passed the sayd sands, and in persuance of her voyage to Druntam aforesayd<br />
arrived upon the Coast of Norway and come neere shoare there, the sayd '''Fare''' was soe<br />
