Transcription in respect of this nation except one boy win respect of this nation except one boy who was English, and that most<br /> of them seemed to this deponent to be dutch men. And otherwise hee cannot depose. To the seaventh and 8th hee referreth himselfe to the lawe and customes arlate, and<br /> otherwise hee cannot depose, only hee holdeth it very unfitt and inreasonable<br /> to committ any shipp belonging to this nation to the charge or possession<br /> of any strannger in time of open warr with other nations, nuch more that<br /> any subiect of any nation with whom this nation hath warr, shiuld<br /> have any such commannd. The Interrogatories. [CENTRE HEADING] To the first hee saith hee was lieutenant of the ''Black Raven'' and<br /> on board her at the time of the said seizure, and saith that English<br /> is his mother tongue, and that hee can speake some Italian, lingua<br /> ffranca and some Turkish and understandeth some dutch, and otherwise<br /> hee cannot answer as hee saith, saving as aforesaid. To the second hee ssith hee cometh warned by a messinger from this Court<br /> to be a witnesse in this businesse; And saith hee was not of the<br /> Counsell of Warr, nor doth hee use any endeavour about making the<br /> said shipp and goods prize, but in his iudgement by what appeared at the<br /> seizure, shee was and is good prize with her lading to this nation. And<br /> otherwise hee cannot answer saving as aforesaid. To the third hee saith that the ''Black Raven'' at the time of the said seizure<br /> was a dutch built shipp, and that her company haled the ''Saint''<br /> ''John Baptist'' in dutch, and otherwise saving as aforesaid hee cannot depose. To the fourth and 5th hee saith that after the seizure and as they were proceedung<br /> for New England, the ''Black Raven'' sprung a leake and this deponent<br /> was sent home with her for this Nation, so that hee cannot tell<br /> what afterwards became of the ''John Baptists'' lading, And otherwise<br /> saving as aforesaid hee cannot depose. To the 6th hee saith that the said fleete had before the taking of the<br /> ''John Baptist'' seized a small bessell laden with salt, and not<br /> having oportunitie through fowke weather to examine the men till the<br /> seizure of the ''John Baptist'', they were then examined, and being found<br /> to be Swedes, and the said small vessell not liable to be prize, Major Sedgewick<br /> with the advise and determination of a Counsell of warr<br /> let her goe. And saith they were about 20 leagues to the West<br /> South West of Scilly when the said seizure of the ''John Baptist''<br /> was made, And otherwise saving as aforesaid hee cannot depose.
