Late Lieutenant of the shipp the ''Black Raven'' in the<br />
service of this Commonwealth, aged 32 yeares or<br />
thereabouts sworne and examined.
To the first article hee saith that the shipp the ''Saint John Baptist'' arlate<br />
at the time of her seizure by the ffleete of this Commonwealth was a<br />
dutch built shipp, which hee knewe by her marke and fashion, hee having<br />
used the sea theise 16 yeares and thereby being well acquainted with<br />
the fashion of severall countries building. And saith that when the<br />
''Black Raven'' came up with the said shipp the ''Saint John Baptist'' amd<br />
laded jer, asking whence shee was, the master or some of the company<br />
answered of Amsterdam, which answer this deponent being upon the<br />
decks of the ''Black Raven'' heard, and with others tooke expresse notice<br />
of the same.
To the second article hee saith and deposeth that shortly after the ''Saint John''<br />
''Baptist'' had submitted to the ''Black Raven'', Maior Sedgewick<br />
commander in cheife of the ffleete in the immediate service of this<br />
Commonwealth, called a Counsell of warr aboard the said shipp the<br />
''Black Raven'' one of the shipps of the said fleete, By and before<br />
which Counsell of warr, the master and some of the company of the<br />
''John Baptist'' were examined, and as thisdeponent was informed by<br />
some of the Counsell forthwith after such examination, the said master<br />
and some of the company had avouched before them that the said shipp the ''John''<br />
''Baptist'' belonged to dantzike, notwithstanding that upon their<br />
first haling, they had said shee belonged to Amsterdam. And otherwise<br />
hee cannot depose.
To the third hee saith that hee cannot depose thereto, not<br />
being present at the Counsell, but this deponent fully understood<br />
from those of the Counsell who were present at the examination, that<br />
the said master could not nor did produce or showe ought whereby it<br />
might appeare that either the shipps or goods or any of them belonged<br />
at London or any subiect of this Commonwealth.
To the fourth hee saith that the lading of the said shipp ''John Baptist''<br />
was wines, Rosin and feathers and some other small matters, and were<br />
received aboard the said shipp (as the master and some of the company confessed<br />
at Bayon in the dominion of the ffrench kinge and were of the growth<br />
and make of ffrance. And otherwise hee cannot depose.
To the fifth hee saith that the lading of the said shipp ''John Baptist''<br />
was taken and seized by the said ffleete on or about the eighteenth<br />
day of March 1653, and otherwise referring himselfe to the [?draft]<br />
of the articles of Peace hee cannot depose.
