the moneth of May 1653. But whether there were att that tyme<br />
any Ambassadors there in England upon a treaty of peace to be had<br />
betwixt England and holland he doth not att present remember<br />
but he well remembreth that att that tyme there wes much talke<br />
and great hopes of a Peace soone after to ensue betwixt the<br />
sayd two Commonwealths, and further he cannot depose.
To the 2. article of the sayd allegation he saith, the said Pibus did goe forth<br />
upon the sayd voyage upon a fishing designe to Graenland to return<br />
to this Port of London, in the employment of certayne merchants and<br />
was obliged to have a certayne number of men to attend and prosequat (sic)<br />
that designe, and he had the sayd number agreed on, and now more<br />
and the sayd Pibus had noe Commission or Letters of marque for the<br />
seizing of any shippes or goods the sayd voyage; All which hee<br />
knoweth to be ture being masters mate in and aboard the sayd shipp<br />
that voyage, and going to and well acquainted with the sayd fishing<br />
designe. And otherwise he cannot depose.
To the 3d article of the sayd allegation This deponent saith that, whilest the<br />
sayd shipp the ''Martha'' did continue att Graenland the sayd tyme and<br />
voyage, and long before, the dutch built vessell in question was mett<br />
with, there was in and about the English fishing place at Greenland<br />
a fame and report that an absolute peace was made and accorded by<br />
and betweene the sayd two Republiques of England and the United<br />
Provinces, which report came from some of the Dutch shallopps<br />
which some of the English had mett with and had discourse with<br />
some of the Dutch men in the sayd shallops. And further saith<br />
that in the Passage of the ''Martha'' for London she mett with<br />
severall fishermen att sea, and they of this deponents hearing<br />
did confidently relate it as a certayne truth that the sayd peace<br />
was firmely and finally concluded, And this deponent and others<br />
of the ''Marthas'' Company did hope and beleive that the sayd report<br />
was true, And further or otherwise he cannot depose.
To the fourth article of the sayd allegation This deponents aith that the sayd<br />
dutch=built vessell which was mett withall by the sayd Pibus this deponent<br />
and Company in their Returne from Graenland was mett off off<br />
Shottland whither by reason of the wind it was not then possible for the<br />
''Martha'' to goe, And it was upwards of two hundred leagues from<br />
England, And the sayd Pibus this oponent and Company did not<br />
fight with or against the sayd dutch built shipp, but onely called to her<br />
for newes by shooting two or three gunnes at randon (sic) after the manner<br />
