The personall answers of the worshipfull<br />
'''William Stepens''' doctor of lawes and one of<br />
the Judges of the high court of Admiralty<br />
made to the pretensed positions of a pretensed<br />
Libell given and admiitted on the behalfe<br />
of Robert Bagnall as followeth.
To the first he answereth and beleeveth that within<br />
the time arlate hee this rendent was in the<br />
quiet and peaceable possession of the said ship<br />
and the arlate John ffletcher and this rendent<br />
had treaty and conference to togeather concerning<br />
teh said ffletcher his goeinge as master of<br />
teh said ship the ''Constant'' formely called the<br />
''William and ffredericke'' to saile and navigate<br />
the said ship meerly as a servant and not otherwise and hee this rendent did<br />
condescend and agree that the said fletcher<br />
should goe as master of the said ship, provided<br />
hee would bring sureties to be engaged and<br />
be bound, for his honest faithfull behaviour<br />
dureinge the time of his trust as master in<br />
the said ship, which as this rendent beleiveth the said ffletcher did<br />
promise and undertake to doe, and by<br />
reason of the [?XXX] agreement between this<br />
rendent, and the said ffletcher, hee the<br />
said ffletcher had free accesse, egresse and<br />
regresse in and out of the said ship, all things<br />
being performed but only the said ffetchers<br />
giveinge the said security, which this rendent<br />
daily expected to have, But the said<br />
ffletcher tooke the oportunity of the said<br />
freedome, and went away with the said<br />
ship as msater thereof from this Port>
