Transcription

afterwards hee did sell a part of her to the sayd [?Cleve], And saith that
before hee hath deposed that the sayd Jelfe did in presence of this deponent and
his wife and one of this deponents servants acknowledge that hee had promised
teh sayd Jelfe twenty shillings a weeke for goeing Master of the sayd
hoy or shipp and sayd hee would bee as good as his word and alsoe then sayd
that the sayd Jelfe did well deserve it for hee was very carefull of her
when hee was at Sea And further saving his foregoeing deposition hee
cannot answere/

To the 3 hee cannot answere/

To the 4th hee saith hee did not sayle in the hoye Interrate any voyage uner
Command of the Interrate Jelfe, and saith it will bee neither profitt
nor preiudice to him which soever of the parties in this suite bee over
throwne therein./

To the 5th hee saith the Interrate henry Jelfe is commonly reputed to be
an able seaman, and hath of this deponents knowledge gone severall
voyages in shipps in service of this Commonwealth and hath bin
as this deponent hath credibly heard forty shillings a moneth
paid him for such his service And further saving his foregoeing
deposition hee canot answere. saving hee saith hee did observe that
the sayd shipp or hoye the Thomas and Catherine returned home safe and well in such voyages as shee made
under the conduct of the sayd Jelfe as Master of her/

To the 6th Interrogatorie hee saith hee hath bin a mariner and used to sayle
with a hoye betwixt Quinborowe and London and betwixt Rochester and
London with Corne and other Commodities these thirty yeares last and upwards and knoweth that hee this deponent
having occasion sometymes to lye a moneth togeather unladen yet he
hath allowed to his men which hee hyred the like wages for the
tyme his vessell laye emptie, as while shee was at sea in
her voyage, and hath knowne other owners of hoyes doe the like And
further hee cannot answere/

To the last hee saith saving his foregoeing deposition hee cannot
answere saving hee beleeveth in his conscience that the producent
hath not receaved full satisfaction for the wages due to him, for
that the sayd ffannce did in his life tyme in presence of this deponent
and others offer to give the sayd Jelfe twelve pounds in full satisfaction
for wages due to him for foeing Master of the sayd hoye which
the sayd Jelfe refused saying Cosen ffawnce you knowe there is a
greate deale more due to mee for wages, or words to that effect/

Examined on the sayd Interrogatories the foresayd Robert
Barden saith as followeth./

To the first Interrogatorie hee saith hee cometh to testifie the truth being soe
required by henry Jelfe the producent And to the rest of the Interrogatories
hee answereth negatively./
