further hee confessed and said, that when the said shipp was in Spaine, the
said Christian Cloppenburgh understanding that there was warrs betwixt
England and holland, hired him the said Trumpeter and the rest of
his men a newe for Ostend, and tould them
that when they came upon the coast and found it cleare of English men
of warr they could goe right for holland, And saith hee the said
Trumpeter made the said confession partly in English and partly in dutch
which this deponent understood, And the said sailemaker speaking apart to
this deponent in English, told him that hee knewe asmuch as the Trumpeter
and that they sailed from Amsterdam and were bound thither againe. And
otherwise hee cannot depose.
To the Interrogatories. [CENTRE HEADING]
To the first Interrogatorie hee saith and deposeth that
for the space of an houre and halfe before they went to the shipp they
hadf bin in company of the said Trumpeter and sailemaker and some
twelve men of the Salvadors company at the States armes in the said
towne, and since hee hath severall times seene them, and otherwise hee
never knewe them nor knoweth the name of any of them saving the said
Trumpeter, andsaving as aforesaid hee cannot durther answer.
To the second hee saith the said confession was made in an upper roome
of the said house having the signe of the [?shipp] having a balcone towards the waterside, about midnight
and after supper, And otherwise saving his foregoing deposition hee cannot
depose.
To the third hee saith they came to the signe of the shipp aforesaid about eight of
the clock at night and kept company all that night and parted about
foure of the clock the next morning. And otherwise hee referreth
himselfe to his foregoeing deposition.
To the fourth hee saith hee had bin in company of the Trumpeter and
others as aforesaid at the States armes before they came to the shipp
but hee had noe speech with them about the Salvador at the States armes,
And otheriwse hee referreth himselfe to his foregoing deposition.
To the 5th hee referreth himselfe as aforesaid and otherwise cannot
answer, not being able as hee saith to remember the very identicall
words after soe long time.
To the 6 hee saith the said Trumpeter is a faire lustie man having the haire of his head light coloured,
tall well built and of about 36 yeares of age in his estimation,
and that the said meeting and supping together was contrived by this
deponent and the said mr Astell and Johnson and one mr Simmonds
of the prize office, to the end to learne som what out of the said
Trumpeter and sailemaker for the States advantage against the said
shipp and lading.
To the 7 hee saith the said confession was made by way of answer
to questions put to him the said Trumpeter by the said Johnson/
To the 8 hee saith hee was borne at Welby in hereford shire
and can speake only English but understandeth dutch prettie well
and could soe doe for 8 or 10 yeares past having bin a waiter aboard
and conversing much with dutch men by that meanes.
