The seaventh of January 1655. [CENTRE HEADING]
Examined upon the foresaid alleagtion.

John Wynn of Barking Mariner, aged 26 yeares or thereabouts
sworne and examined.
To the first Interrogatorie hee saith hee well knoweth all the parties producent
arlate and knoweth them to have bin for all the time arlate and to be the
true and lawfull owners of foure hoyes and one ketch, and for such commonly
accompted, which hee knoweth being a fisherman of Barking of which
place they alsoe are Inhabitants and are fishermen, and doe therein imploy
their said vessells of this deponents sight and knowledge, who useth to goe
out on fishing imployment with them.
To the second article hee saith and deposeth that on the sixteenth day of
december last past the producents Edmund Hampson, William Scotcher, James
Wardell, Valentine hudson and John Mortimer with their said five vessells
manned, being at sea on a fishing voyage in a place called the [?Swayn]
on the coast of Essex, found a shipp or vessell (which they afterwards
understood to be called or named the Hope of Quinsborough) in a sincking
condition upon a place called the Middle Ground, and soe farr sunck
that there was foure inches water upon her upper deck, and having
neither man, boy, dogg or ratt on board her, whereupon the
said Hampson and other persons aforesaid with their companies fell to
worke and endeavoured to save the said shipp and lading, and at length
after much labour and paines and hazard both of their lives and vessells
they gott the said shipp the Hope and her lading up, and
preservingher from quite sincking and perishing, brought her and
her lading of hemp, clapboard, deales and oares,
to Grayes in safetie, being fourtie miles and upwards from the said Middle
Ground where they found her sincking as aforesaid, All which hee knoweth
being one of the companie of the said William Scotchers hoy, and
acting in the said saving the said shipp Hope and lading, and going aboard
her, and helping to bring her up to Grayes aforesaid, and this hee
saith was and is true, publique and notorious.
To the third hee saith that the same 16th day of december, and before
the said fisherman sawe or were aware of the said shipp the Hope her
being in such danger, they met the commander and company of a man of warr of this Commonwealth
called the hare Pinck, at the sho[?oe], by and from which said Commander and
company they were informed and told that they the said Commander
and Company had bin at the said place where the
said shipp hope and lading soe lay, and had there come to an anchor
and had put some of their company aboard her, and endeavoured to their
utmost to save her and her lading, and had thereby much endangered
their lives, but could effect nothing therein, and were forced to come
away and leave her, which this deponent heard them soe declare and
report to the said fishermen. And otherwise hee cannot depose.
