Semantic markup policy: Version One
Section 1: General Points to be aware of
Whilst marking up appears to be fairly straight forward there have been different views on some issues. So here is some clarification.
1. When marking up it is important to make sure there are no spaces at the beginning and end of the marking up brackets e.g. <place>Surrey </place> It must be <place>Surrey</place>
2. When words are illegible because they are in the gutter, mark it up as a TO DO rather than a HELP.
3. ONLY markup dates, places, occupations, shipps and people. IF you are not sure of anything write it as a NOTE.
Section 2: What do we markup?
1. Persons when they are cited with their name
2. Places (idem: 'London' or 'Callice', forget the 'same place' or similar)
3. Ships – Mark the name of a ship AND men of war AND man of war
Do not include French or Brest or whatever place or name is in front of the men of war. This can be marked up as a PLACE
Do not include the type of ship e.g. <ship>Fortune, a frigatt</ship> OR the in front of it.
It should be <ship>Fortune</ship> OR <ship>man of warr</ship>
4. Occupation (normally this is by the name)
5. Dates markup the date and put the numerical value of the date in the box that appears. To be consistent it is best if we use hyphens to separate day, month etc. Whilst we realise that the year may need to be changed in order to order the database a later date, we think this should be done at the editing stage.
6. Commodities Mark up the commodity (e.g. wood, cotton wool, currants etc) but not the quantity -
7. Currency Markup the currency e.g. pounds, shillings, pence and common non-English currencies: dollars; gilders; livres; peeces of eight; ryalls; but not the quantity
