Biographical synthesis

Robert Demetrius (b. ca. 1631; d. ?). Merchant.

Servant of James Stanier, London merchant

"Hee was borne in Saint Mary Axe in London".[1]

Resident in 1654 in the parish of Saint Andrew Undershaft.[2]

Resident in 1666 in the parish of Saint Botolph without Aldergate.[3]

Evidence from High Court of Admiralty

Twenty-three year old Robert Demetrius deposed on March 15th 1654 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on behalf of the claimers in the case of "The clayme of Cornelis and Henry Hillywervin merchants of Antwerp for their moneyes in the shipp the Sampson whereof Otto George was master taken by some of the Parliaments fleet".[4]

Twenty-five year old Robert Demetrius deposed, together with Ezekiel Lampen, on September 18th 1656 in the High Court of Admiralty. They were examined "On the behalfe of Mr. Stanier and others touching the Saint Phillip. Demetrius claimed that the Saint Phillip, a 250 ton vessel, had been bought a month ago at Amsterdam by "Peter Vandeput, James Stanier, Roger Hatton, and Ralph Lee
Englishmen and merchants residing in London". [5]

Twenty-eight year old Robert Demetrius deposed on July 27th 1659 in the High Court of Admiralty touching the goods of the Santa Maria.

Thirty-five year old Robert Demmetrius deposed on October 26th 1666 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined in a case concerning Alderman Samuel ffoote, Mr Daniel Pourteene and Mr Edward Watts, London merchants. Demetrius stated that they were "merchants of very good quality and great traders to Venice Gallipoli and Zant and other places in the Streights". The case involved the shipment of currants from Zant to London on board the ship the Nostro Seigniora del Gratia. Demetrius added that "there was no assurance made at Genoa for the said Currans to come from Zant to London for the account of the foresaid Pourteene, and the said Pourteene gave the said ffactor[?s] that procured the same credit in his bookes". Demetrius provided the personal detail that "hee was borne in Saint Mary Axe in London. And saith that Mr Pourteene married this rendents first cozen."[6]
