In the name of God Amen the Twenty Eighth of July One Thousand six hundred ffiftie Three [CSG: sic: but seems to be dated at end 1656!] I Thomas Hodges of London Marchant (sic) being of good health of Body and of sound and perfect minde and memorie praise ne therefore given to Almighty God...
...And my Bodie I comitt to the Earth whereof it was formed in hopes of a Joyfull resurection leaving the interring there of to my Executors heresafter named But to be done in a modest and private way in theise sadd tymes of our Kingdomes troubles which the Lord in his mercie send a speedie end And touching such Temporall Goods and Substance as God in his greate mercie hath bestowed upon me I dispose thereof as following first my Will and desire is That all and everie such debts and summes of money whatsoever as att the tyme of my decease I shall trulie owe to anie person or persons shall be satisfyed and paid within as short time after my death as conveniently may be And the debts owing by me and the Charges of my funds all being first paid and deducted All the rest of my Goods Chattells debts and personall Estate whatsoever shall according to the Custome of the Cittie of London be devided (sic) into Three equall parts and Shares One of my said Three parts or shares I will shall remaine unto Mary Hodges my Loving and deare Wife But fearing that may Come short what was agreed with her before marriage I give her over and above that agreement all her Jewells plate and householdstuffe not doubting but my children will fare the better for what theire (sic) Mother injoyes Another of the said Three parts or Shares I will unto my Eight Children unmarried (That is to say) To my Sonn John To my Sonn Tho: To my Sonn W:m To my daughter Martha To my daughter Elizabeth To my daughter Rebecca my Sonn Richard and my Sonne George Hodges equally to be devided (sic) amongst them as and for there orphanage parts oweing [??] unto them by vertue (sic) of the said Custome and to be paid unto my said Sonnes att there (sic) severall age of

Twentie one Yeares and to my said daughters att theire (sic) lie severall ages or marriages first Hapning (sic) And in Case anie of my said Sonnes and daughters shall happen to depart this life before such age or marriages respectivelie (sic) as aforesaid That then the overplusage of him her or them soo deceasing shall remaine to the Survivour (sic) of them equallie amongst the said Survivours to be parted shared and devided (sic) And the other Third part of my said Goods Chattells Debts and personall Estate I researve (sic) my selfe for and towards the payment and satisfaction of all and everie the severall Legacies and bequests hereafter in and by this my last and Testament [CSG: “will” is missing in the original text] Limited given or bequeathed (that is to say To my daughter Prideaux (sic) I bequeath as a Legacy the Summe of one hundred pounds and to her Three children one hundred pounds apeece and to my Daughter Edwards I bequeath as a Legacie the summe of one hundred pounds And to her first Child I bequeath one hundred pounds if God shall bless her with anie To my Sonne John Hodges I bequeath my land in Laham and the Land att Ramsholl after my Sister Hodges decease having given her that Marp:t for her life and fifty pounds a more p annum during her Life Which fiftie pounds per Annum I will that he pay her out of his lands To my Sonne Thomas to make up his Orphanage part the Summe of Two Thousand pounds To my Sonne Wiliam to make upp his orphanage part the Summe of Two Thousand pounds To my daughter Martha to make upp her Orphanage part the Summe of Sixteene hundred pounds To my daughter Elizabeth to make upp her orphanage aprt the Summe of ffifteene hundred pounds To my Daughter Rebecca to make upp her orphanage part the Summe of ffourteene hundred pounds To my Sonne Richard To make up his Orphanage part the summe of ffifteene hundred pounds To my sonne George to make upp his Orphanage part the Summe of ffifteene hundred pounds And now and Concerning my Sonne John Hodges wherever he being one of my Eight Children That is to service one Third part of my Estate as above Provided I buy not the Land of Master Doyly called Overbury Hall neare Laham But if I goe through for that Then I bequeath that Land to him instead of his part of the Third, Soo that the Third part I will be devided (sic) to the Seaven remaining Children amd what wants to make upp theire equall portions Allotted them above as alsoe to make upp what agreed to my Wife I doo her order my Land in Yorkeshire to be sold called Marlon [?] and xxoplie farme now xxxxx Two hundred sixtie pounds per Annum But worth Three hundred pounds per Annum And when theire (sic) Leases are out Alsoe I order Brighton (sic) and Molborne (?) [OR, Holbourne] to be sould (sic) lett to Mayster (sic) James Denby [?] of Yorke for one hundred twentie five pounds per annum and XXXXX XXXXX but when theire Leases out will be worth Two hundred twenty pounds per Annum besides a fine [?] which Mayster Xxxxx xxx xxxxxxxx and for every OxGange [??] Tenn pounds as alsoe my Land in Cornwall [?] which MXXX BXXXXX payes Sixty pounds per Annum but xxxxxx xxxx Brother xxxx worth three hundred pound per Annum And if those will not doe then xxxxx my six houses in Bucklesbury to be sould and my Irish Land xxxx xxx Alsoe I bequeath to my good friend [?] Master Thomas Hodges Minister att Kensington as a Legacie the summe of fiftie pounds To xxxx XXXXX Master Watson [??] the summe of Twentie pounds as a Legacie To my Man [?] George if he lives with me the summe of xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

CODICILL
I Thomas Hodges of London Merchant being seized in ffee simple of a house in Bucklesbury in the possession of one Master Banister and alsoe of Certaine Lands and Hereditaments called Xxrgell [?] in Cornwell in the possession of Master Pxxxxxx or his Assignes and other Lands and hereditaments in Martin and Milborne in the Countie of Yorke and of regaind Irish Lands amounting to aboute seaventie five pounds per Annum I doe hereby will and order that my Executors soe soone after my death as conveniently may be shall make sale through or of any part there of for the best profitt they can and that the monie (sic) thereupon arising shall be devided (sic) into three equall parts whereof I give one Third part to my Wife Mary Hodges And thother (sic) two parts amonst all my children John only excepted for the increase of their portions and my Will is that the proffitts of the said Lands Tenements and Hereditaments shall until such sale to be accodingly had and iniojyed (sic) by, my said Wife and Children John only excepted And I doo hereby declare this Codicill to be annexed to my Will and be of as full force and effect as if it were Contained in the said Will Witness my hand and seale this ffifteenth day of Aprill In the yeare of our Lord God One Thousand six hundred fifty and Six.
