Abstract & context

Captain Nicholas Hurlestone (alias Hurleston, Hurlston)

Family background

Captain Nicholas Hurlestone was from a family of mariners and seamen with its roots in Sandwich, Kent. He himself was resident in Redriff, Surrey.

He was connected with the Moyer family of mariners of Leigh, Essex and Limehouse, Essex, through his marriage to Anna Moyer, who was the daughter of the mariner James (c. 1585 -1636/37) and Lydia Moyer. He was thus the son-in-law of James Moyer the elder and brother-in-law of four Moyer merchants and/or mariners active in the 1640 to 1680 period - Lawrence, Samuel [the younger], James [the younger], and William Moyer. Nicholas Hurlestone had married Anna Moyer prior to 1637, since James Moyer the elder, when writing his will, mentioned "my sonne Nicholas Hurlstone."[1] In James Moyer the younger's will, written in 1661, the younger James mentioned his brother "Captain Nicholas Hurlestone," together with Nicholas' sons, Nicholas and Richard, and Nicholas' then unmaried daughters, Lydia, Rebecca, Sarah, and Elizabeth.[2]

Of the four daughters named by James Moyer the younger, who were unmarried in 1661, just two were unmarried at the time of Nicholas Hurlestone writing his own will in 1665. Rebecca Hurlestone had married in the year following James Moyer the younger's writing of his will. Her spouse was Giles Thornburgh, a widower and gentleman of St Martin's, Ludgate, who was twelve years older than her.[3]

After her father's death, the twenty year old Sarah Hurlestone married, in 1668, William Leeke, of St Saviour's, Southwark.[4]

Trinity House

Nicholas Hurlestone was the older warden of Trinity House in 16?65, the year of his death.[5] His relationship with fellow Trinity House member, Sir William Batten, was somewhat fraught.[6] On November 15th, 1665, Pepy's reported dining at the Kings-head taverne "where all the Trinity-house dined today to choose a new Maister in the roome of Hurlestone that is dead. And Captain [Nicholas] Crispe is chosen." Despite the choice of Crispe, Pepys suggested that Sir William Batten was the real power, and that the company would "grow the worse for that man's death, for now Batten, and in him a lazy, corrupt, doting rogue, will have all the sway here."[7]

Assessing Nicholas Hurlestone's social status

Captain Hurlestone provides a telling example of the difficulties which occur when attempting to assess social status of commercially active individuals and families in seventeenth century England.

Firstly, descriptions by contemporaries and by later eighteenth century commentators which imply status can vary widely for the same individual and family. In the case of Nicholas Hurlestone he is described at various times and places in his career as "Captain Hurlestone", "Nicholas Hurlestone, gent., of Redriff," and "Nicholas Hurlestone, esq."[9]
