Abstract & context

Richard Ball wrote to John Lambton in a letter dated December 1st, 1662, sent from Carwar.

The letter dealt with detailed commercial matters.

Richard Ball was the son of Dr Richard Ball. He had been a personal servant to Sir George Oxenden at Surat prior to his engagement by the English East India Company.

John Lambton was first employed by the English East India Company in February 1650, when he was entertained by a Court of Committees as a factor, along with Christopher Oxenden, Mathew Andrews, Frederick Skinner, and others.[1] Lambton, Oxenden, and Andrews were sent to Surat and were employed for five years. John Lambton went out on the Aleppo Merchant, whereas Christopher Oxenden and Mathew Andrews embarked on the Love, a ship in which Captain William Ryder was part owner. George Smith junior (the future Sir George Smith) stood security for John Lambton.[2]

"[February 27, 1650] The following are entertained as factors: John Lambton, Frederick Skinner, Robert Smith, Christopher Oxenden, Mathew Andrews, Richard Shingler, Thomas Harrison, John Swinnarton, Peter Wightwicke, Willliam Campian. John Smith, Henry Threscrosse, Godfrey Goodman and Thomas Greeneway."[8]

  3. Henry Chowne's son, also named Henry Chowne (alias Chune), was entertained at Surat by the Court of the EEIC in December 1661. Henry Chownes, the father, wrote to Sir George Oxenden a number of times from London. See 2nd April 1663, Letter from Henry Chowne to Sir GO, London, Add. MS. XX, XXX, f. XX; & 10th March 1665/66, Letter from Henry Chowne to Sir GO, London, BL, Add. MS. 40,708 - 40,713, vol, 235, year 1665, ff. 34-35; & 20th April 1667, Letter from Henry Chowne to Sir GO, London, Add. MS. XX, XXX, f. XX
  4. Gibbon Goddard, son of Judge Goddard. John Mascall wrote to Sir George Oxenden in March 1665/66, from London, and included a detailed invoice from "Will:m Gostlin at y:e Catt in Paternoster Rowe London" to " Guiben Goddard", dated March 5th, 1663/64 (March 1665/66, Letter from John Mascall to Sir GO, London). Gibbon Goddard was evidently a factor in the East Indies. He was ded before March 1665/66, as is clear from John Mascall's letter referred to above
