Right Worp:ll & Hono:d S:r

I most respectively sallute yu, & kindely thanke you:r Worp:e for y:e many Civill ffavo:s you have beene pleased to Cast upon mee, & since o:r departure Sn:a ?Barr y:e 6:th Instant to our arrivall at this place w:ch was y:e 11:th Instant afternoone noothing did offer worth noting to you, but upon o:r arrivall heere found variety of matter, & more than wee would willingly have done, for whereas wee expected y:e Leopard: to have bine laden at Porcatt[2] & onward on the way to Europe she was fast ridding in this place, w:th all S:r Abrah:m Shipmans[3] pvisions for his souldiers, in her, S:r Abrah:m not suffering them to land any thing, pretending that this place was nott fitt to receave them especially because y:e Governer of Carwarr would not give ffree leave for them to settle, & from whome was their greatest hope of Lattour supply of victuall & other provisions to build & fortifie, therefore hee, & his souldiers for some tyme denyed to goo out of y:e shipp at all & declared they would bee transported to some other place or Carryed home, upon w:ch Cap:t Rich:d Minors[4] was forced y:e 24:th Decemb:r to Exhibit A Protest[5] against S:r Abrah:m Etc:a for all damadges y:t should happen to y:e King, y:e Hono:ble Comp:a, or himselfe by theire soo obstructing him in his voyadge; w:ch Protest as I can learne was but little vallued amongst them, & not at all answered to y:e tyme of o:r arrivall, and now to little purpose, & as they had thus dealt w:th Cap:t Minors, wee found them though Landed upon y:e Island yett much disordered & discontented, muc h examining against y:e place, w:ch treuly S:r is in all respects much better than ever was presented or I could have imagined it to bee; upon y:e the Earle our Admirall sent mee a shoare presently after wee anchored heere; to waite upon S:r Abrah:m & to desire him y:t hee w:th two or three of his officers would please to come on board our Shipp y:t the businesse might bee debated, & something Considrdd off, soo accordingly S:r Abrah:m w:th three of his officers did waite upon y:e earle[6] a board, & y:e businesse was discoursed & after some tyme though I thinke a gainst S:r Anrah:m minde y:e Earle did Convince him, of y:e Necessity of their a bidding heere at least till thye had Certanty off a better place

[f.28]

Whereupon orders were given by Cap:t Minors to deliver y:e pvisions w:ch y:e 12:th in y:e morneing hee begann to doo & yesterday Effected all & is now gooing to saile; y:e Lord goo w:th them. Yesterday allso wee w:th our Seamen Mounted 6: peece of Ordinance a shoare for them though they not well pleased at it, who still Hanker after theire pleasure more than any thing of hono:r or honesty; yett wee weare not discouradged at this but proceeded & placed them a fflagg staffe & spread his Maj:tis Coullours; w:ch was salluted by all our shipe: , & allsoe by y:e shoare; I pray God it may never depart from this place which, In my Judgem:t is very Convenient & Necessary for o:r Nation, as for theire great discouradgem:t not haveing leave from, noo Correspondency w:th the Govern:r of Carwarr, it was made out to them twas not at all valuable if they had it not for y:t other places would sufficiently supply them w:th all things.

And alsoe there was no doubt when once they weare settled but y:t y:e said Gouverner wpould at least Joyne in ffreindshipp w:th them, if not seeke to them for it.

M:r Gary[7] hearing of y:e former Disorders amongst y:e souldiers &c:a; y:e Pinke being at Goa & Cap:t Stevens[8] desireing him to goo downe w:th him to see w:t hee could doo as to psuadeing y:m to some reason, hee did take y:e paines & came downe Endeavouring all y:t in him Lay to psuade & Encouradge them to settle & fortifie them selves upon y:e Island, promiseing all assistanmce & supply of victualls, & other necessary provisions; But poore man hee found noo better success thaan yo:r Worp:e & others y:t hansomely studied theire good have found, w:ch is onely Envieing ?Excamations & ?rayleing – pray God give them a sight of y:[XXX] Errores

Wee are at pres:t ready to saile & intend to depart y:s night haveing done w:t wee Cann here, & I hope necessity will force the Gentlemen to pursue & finish what wee have begann. I am glad I am Come to an End of the newes, pray God yo:r Worp:e may haeere noo more such, soo w:th my humble service to yo:r selfe & Kinde respects to M:r Goodyear, Aungier & I take leave & will remaine
