Biographical synthesis

John Tuffley (alt. Tufley, Turfley) (b.ca.1637; d.?ca.1686). Cooper. Apprentice to Alexander Fowler, cooper of Saint Olave Hart Street.

Resident in parish of Saint Olave Hart Street in 1658.

There is a will for John Tuffley, cooper of Saint Botolph Aldgate, proved on November 22nd 1688.[1]

Evidence from High Court of Admiralty

Twenty-one year old John Tuffley deposed on May 20th 1658 in the High Court of Admiralty.[2] He was examined on an allegation in the cause of XXX.

Tuffley's master, Alexander Fowler, also deposed in the High Court of Admiralty on May 28th 1658.[3] He was examined on an allegation on behalf of Mr Bence in the case of "Cawswell and Company against Bence". In his deposition he mentions his servant, 'John Turfley', but Tuffley is clearly the correct spelling, since this is how the man signed himself and is also the spelling used by the notary public for Tuffley's own deposition,
