this deponent master of the shipp the Mayflower of new England, bound from
Virginia to New England and his company meeting with fowle weather and
contrary windes and their provisions failing, were forced to put
into santa domingo for the preservation of their lives, whether being come, this
deponent there met with the producent John Thompson and some
of his mariners, and was then and there informed by him and others that
about nine or tenn monethes before such this deponents comming, the said
Captaine Thompson and company in the shipp the Samll Mallaga Marchant
(whereof the said Thompson was commannder) bound for New England having bin met with and plundred
by the ffrench at sea and their provisions and victualls taken away, were
forced for the preservation of thei lives to put with their said shipp and
her lading of salt into Santa domingo to get supplie of victualls, and
that there the Governour had promised them free libertie to come into
the harbour and supplie themselves with victualls and water and to depart
with their said shipp and lading of salt at their owne pleasure, and that
upon confidence thereof, they came in, and being come in, their
said shipp and lading were seized and confiscated by the said Governour
or his order, and the said Thompson and company dispossessed of her
and that thereby the same were lost to the owners thereof. And saith that
this deponent was detained there about six or seaven weekes and then came
thence in a shipp of Palma and the said Thompson with hin abd two
more of his company, being quite deprived of their said shipp the
small Mallaga Marchant and her lading, and thence they got to Teneriff
and soe for London, And otherwise hee cannot depose.

To the 6th 7th and 8th hee cannot depose.

To the 9th hee saith hee hath heard the said Captaine Thompson speake
to the purposes arlate, and otherwise hee cannot depose.

James Cowse of London Merchant, aged 29 yeares
or thereabouts sworne and examined.

To the first article hee cannot depose.

To the second third fourth fifth and sixth articles hee saith and deposeth
that in or about the noneth of Aprill 1653 there came and arived at
the Iland of Palma (one of the Canary Ilands) from hispaniola
a vessell called the Trinity whereof ffrancisco Cardoso was commannder
and therein the producent John Thompson and diverse other Englishmen.
and this deponent being there and seeing their arivall and
having speach with the said John Thompson, hee understood and was informed
by him, that the Governour of Santa domingo had taken and seized
a shipp whereof hee the said Tompson was commannder and her lading
of saslt upon the comming in of him and his company with her into that
harbour
