Examined upon the said Allegation:-/
5./
Roger Morris of Crutched ffryers London Cooper
aged 48 yeares or thereabouts a Wittnesse sworne and
examined saith and declareth as followeth videlicet:-
To the 7th article of the said Allegation hee saith and deposeth, That hee this
deponent well saw and onserved (being thererunto espeially employed by Mr Robert
Rich Merchant of this City of London) that severall shipps or vessells by
name the Mary, the hoveling, the Flgagg of Truro and the Cooke were
taken seized and brought up to the Cowes in the Isle of Wight by the allate
Captaine Stanton by Vertue of Commission of Reprizall from the high Court of Admiraltie
of England, and that this deponent by order of the said Robert Rich did unlade
and helpe and was assistant at the dischargeing of the said severall shipps ladeing or most part thereof
at the Cowes aforesaid, which was bout the moneths of January ffebruary
and March in the yeare 1651 according to the English stile, where this deponent
saw and was severall times aboard the shipp or man of warr called the Elizabeth
whereof the said Captaine Stanton was Commannder And thereby had and hath
good and assured knowledge of what by him is predeposed. And further
cannot depose./
To the 8th hee saith hee referreth himselfe to his foregoeing deposition./
To the 9th hee saith, That in or about the moneth of January 1651 last past
this deponent being as aforesaid employed by and present with the said Robert
Rich did severall times give order to the said Samuel Stanton to goe to sea with the said
shipp the Elizabeth by Vertue of and according to the said latters of Reprizall
granted by this Court, which the said Captaine Stanton refused to doe sayeing
and declareing that hee would first see what became of the prizes that thee
had already brought in or words to that of the like effect, And saith that the
said shipp the Elizabeth by Vertue of and according to the said letters of Reprizall
granted by this Court, which the said Captaine Stanton refused to doe, sayeing
and declareing that hee would first see what became of the prizes that hee
had already brought in or words to that or the like effect, And saith that the
said shipp or man of warr videlicet the Elizabeth remained at the said place
of Cowes of this deponents sight and knowledge till about the latter end of
the moneth of March 1652: English style, not being at all employed
to sea according to the sesire of the said Robert Rich, and the said leyyers of
Reprizall, And further cannot depose:-/
To the 10th hee referreth himselfe to his foregoing deposition to the precedent article:/
To the 11th and schedule therein mentioned and now read unto this deponent hee saith
and deposeth, That hee knoweth nothing of the order in the said schedule [?expressed GUTTER]
and conteyned, but well remembreth, That the said Robert Rich did severall times
in this deponents pressure and hearing desire the said Captaine Stanton to come up [?with GUTTER]
his said shipp the Elizabeth from the said Port of Cowes to london and there
to receive order and instructions as to his further proceedings on and [?regarding GUTTER]
the said shipp, which notwithstandeing the said Captaine Stanton refused or
delayed to doe soe long as this deponent remained in the said Isle of Wight
which was till abbout the latter end of the moneth of March 1652
aforesaid, when and where this deponent left the said shipp the Elizabeth
and the said Captaine Stanton./
To the 12th and 13th hee saith and deposeth, That during the time that this deponent
was employed at the Cowes as aforesaid by the said Robert Rich for [?XXX GUTTER]
about the unladeing of the shipps of Vessells predeposed, hee saw and [?XX GUTTER]
