and was in and aboard her at the time of her seizure, And by such his service
aboard her, and by the common and generall report of her Master and
Companie of Mariners aboard her, and also by publique report and fame at
Amsterdam, is well assured, That the said shipp and appurtenances did and
doe belong to the said doone Verategan and ompanie being subjects of
theise United Netherlands. And further hee cannot depose:-/
To the second hee saith, That hee this examinate was an ordinary Mariner aboard
the said shipp att the time of her said setting saile and departing from the Texell
in holland which was about the 20th of Aprill or May in the yeare
1654 and saith the said shipp came to and arrived at the Barbadoes
upon or about the moneth of June 1654. as this rendent remembreth
And further cannot depose/:-
To the third hee saith, That the said shipp had aboard her a Cargazon
of severall sorts of goods, as shooes, stockins, linnen, silkes and other goods
which hee cannot particularize being proper for the West Indies, and
were sofarr as this deponent heard or understood the proper goods of the
said doone, Verstegan and Companie, and were received and laden
aboard the said shipp at Amsterdam, and that as this deponent heard
from her said Master at Barbadoes, hee the said Master had permission
from the Governor of that place freely to trade and traffique there, and
soe much hee saith was publique and notorious at such time and times
as the said shipp discharged and sent any of her said Lading ashoare into
the Barbadoes and that without such permission they did not nor would
adventure any of their said goods ashoare, as well knowing that by the
Custome of that place it was not free to trade or traffique there without
such permission first obteyned, And further cannot depose./
To the 4th hee saith, the said shipp was seized at or neere the Barbadoes
by some of the English fleet at or upon the 18th day of ffebruary last
past, and that at the time of such her seizure, shee had aboard her
2/3 parts of her lading aboard consisting in sugars shortly before taken in
and aboard her at the Barbadoes aforesaid, and sofarr as this examinate
knoweth the said shipp and goods were soe seized and taken by authoritie
and order from Generall Penn the Commannder of the English fleet
then in those parts, this rendent then being one of the said shipps Companie
And saith the Master of the said shipp was left ashoare at Barbadoes
and some of the said shipps Companie, and others of them have since
been transported in English shipps from thence to London; And saith
the said shipp and goods so farr as this rendent there observed came into
the possession of the English fleet that hath made seizure thereof
And further cannot depose
