Transcription

To the Crosse Interrogatories in the second place.

To the 1 and 2 he saith It is prohibited to transport sylver or moneyes out of Spaine
without license obteyned for the same, and somuch he beleiveth such as use the ports of
Spaine know. And saith that unlicensed sylver if seized in the Ports of Spaine
is forfeited to the King of Spaine. but if it arrive in fflanders or elsewhere out
of the power of the Spanish Lawes It is wholly out of danger, and a free
merchandize and somuch he saith is generally knowne and taken notice of in
fflanders and other places. And otherwise he cannot depose./

Undershaft of London, merchant aged 48
Yeares or thereabouts a witnes sworne and
examined deposeth and saith as followeth videlicet

To the first Article of the sayd allegation This deponent saith that the arlate
Paulus Cobrisse was by common repute borne in fflanders, and for
these 12 yeares last past of the knowledge of this deponent being
his Correspondent hath bene a merchant of great accompt living
att present in Bridges, and so hath done five or six yeares now past
and before that for six or 7 yeares he lived in Spaine and was and
is a subiect of the King of Spaine and so accounted. And otherwise
cannot depose.

To the second Article of the sayd allegation This deponent saith that the sayd Paulus
Cobrisse for theis 12 yeares last past and upwards hath and still doth drive
a great trade betwixt fflanders England, Cadiz and St Lucar in Spayn
and the Indies for plate and other Commodities having his factors in
the sayd places to receyve his goodes and make him returnes thereof
And this deponent for his owne part hath sent severall great and
large quantityes of English Manu factures from this port of London to
Cadiz for the prodeucents Accompt consigning them for and to him self
whi est he comaynded in Spaine, and since his comeing into fflaanders
to his factors and Agents att Cadiz, from whom he this deponent hath
upon the producents Accompt receyved the proceed of severall such
goods in plate and sylver to the value of many thousands of pounds
And being still a Correspondent of the producent knoweth the premisses
to be true. And otherwise cannot depose.

To the third fourth and fifth articles of the sayd allegation and schedule therein
mentioned and bill of lading thereto annexed. This deponent saith
that he saw the sayd bill of lading about 11 monethes agoe in the handes
of the producent who then told him that the plate therein mentioned was
his owne to wit, seven packetts of sylver conteyning thirty six peices
of sylver weighing 174. markes and .1. ouncez or thereabouts. and marked
as in the margent [P], and hath since see one in the Registry or this Court
upon a file another bill of lading for the sayd plate of the same ?tenares ; And
saith that he this deponent in the yeares 1648 aand 1649 did by the producent
order for his Accompt and with the proceed of his sylver in that deponents hands

"Paulus, beter gekend als Don Paulo, werd geboren omstreeks 1605. Don Paulo's vader was Judocus (Joost) Cobrysse en zijn moeder was Anna (Tanneken) Boels. Zijn grootouders langs vaders kant waren Jacobus Cobrysse en Clara Gaillard; zijn grootvader langs moeders kant was Amandus (Amant) Boels. Hij had een broer en een zus, genaamd Jan, Pierre en Marie. Hij was de oudste van de drie kinderen. Hij overleed op 9 oktober 1675.

Algemene notities: Paul Cobrysse, schepen van Brugge en ook gekend onder de naam Don Paulo Cobrysse liet in 1675 bij testament een grote som geld beleggen om (achter-) neefjes en nichtjes bij hun huwelijk een financiëel steuntje te geven dat 435 frank kon bedragen.

Beroepen: Don Paulo's beroep was Heer van Aarsele, schepen en burgemeester van Brugge...."[2]

Paul Cobrisse is named as "Bourgmestre" [mayor] of Bruges in the following Belgian archival metadata from 1667 [?1668 modern stle]:

"Archive: Algemeen Rijksarchief - Archives générales du Royaume ...Comptes généraux....Item: BE-A0510.1 - 29916; Title: Compte, rendu par Paul Cobrisse, aliàs Cobrysse, seigneur d'Arzeele, de l'administration qu'il a eue des deniers provenant de la levée d'un quart pour cent pour droit de convoi levé, dans les ports de Bruges, Ostende et Nieuport, sur les marchandises entrant et sortant, du ler mars 1666 au 28 février 1667. Dates: 1666-1667; General remarks: (1) Les comptes de cette section sont en flamand, à moins qu'il ne soit fait l'observation qu'ils sont en français. (2) Les motifs qui ont amené la perception de ce droit sons énoncés dans la pièce suivante transcrite en tête du compte : " Son Excellence (le marquis (le Castel Rodrigo) désirant pourveoir á faire lever les inconvéniens et obstacles qui se rencontrent au préjudice de la sceureté et liberté de la navigation et entrecours du cour" merce des bons sujets du roy, nostre sire, avecq ses alliez, avant ensuitte estimé à propos d'envoyer " quelqu'ung de sa part vers le roy de la Grande-Bretagne, pour entrer dans quelque ajustement qui puisse " désormais asseurer et affermir la liberté dudict commerce, et que ledict envoyé soit accompagné de quelques négotians intelligens des principales villes marchandes de par deçà, et afin de pourveoir aux " frais qui seront pour ce exposez, Sadicte Excellence ai, pour et au nom de Sa Majesté, par advis de ceux " de ses finances, permis, consenty et ordonné, permect, consent et ordonne, par cestes, que serai levé par " les mains de Paul Cobrisse, bourgmestre de la ville de Bruges, par provision, par forme d'essay, et pour le terme d'ung an, à commencer dés le premier jour du présent mois, ung quart par cent de soultes et quelconcques marchandises entrains et sortans nos portz, en la mesure forme qu'on lève le droit de convoy, pour entre (import applicqué aux frais de ladicte négotiation et de la chambre de négoce, et autres qui résulteront pour le bien et advantage dudict commerce, qui seront payez sur les mandats de Jean Vande Walle , Jean- Baptiste Cartier, Justo de Tollenaere, et du pensionaire de ladicte chambre, en vertu des" quels mandats lesdicts payemens leur seront allouez sans difficulté dans les comptes qu'ilz en rendront de " demy-an en demy-an, par-devant ceux à commettre par ledict conseil des finances. Fait à Bruxelles, le 8 de mars 1666."[4]
