That they all of them went in and were of the said shipps<br />
Companie in the Voiage aforesaid and in the severall qualities<br />
predeposed, And that the said shipp ''hopewell'' being [?XXXXX] upon<br />
the occasion before recited from the said french Squadron of shipps of<br />
Warrs did upon the 11th of May <u>1654</u> last past in the night meet<br />
with a dutchman of warr, which being haled by them, replyed shee<br />
was of Amsterdam, and thereupon the said William Gainer as<br />
Masters mate of the said shipp ''hopewell'' told them that peace was<br />
concluded upon between the dutch and English, and that they<br />
were and ought to be friends or to that effect; thereupon being<br />
demannded by the dutch whence they were and whether bound<br />
answer was returned, they were of London, and bound for<br />
Mallega, upon which the said dutchman of warr seeming to<br />
depart bidd them farewell, but coming along the side of the said<br />
shipp ''hopewell'' and being past her gunns dischardged a full broade side and a volley of<br />
small shott into her, whereupon the said Gainer and Companie<br />
prepared themselves for resistance of the said dutchman of warr<br />
and for the defence of themselves their said ship and lading<br />
from their violence, and so continued in fight with them from<br />
about 9. of the Clocke in the night till about two or three<br />
of the Clocke in the afternoone of the day following being the<br />
12th day of May .<u>1654</u>:- and then the said dutchman of warr declined any further ingagement<br />
whereupon the said shipp ''hopewell'' with the first convenience<br />
of wind made towards the Spanish shoare, and anchored neere<br />
a place called [?Stipion] Castle under the Government of the kinge<br />
of Spaine, and being there at Anchor the said dutch man<br />
or warr came and anchored close by them, and the Lieutenant<br />
thereof coming aboard the ''hopewell'' upon the said 12th day of May<br />
the said William Gainer amongst other discourse said to the said<br />
Lieutenant hee hoped that when they (meaning the said shipp<br />
''hopewell'' and Companie) came into England they (meaning the<br />
said dutchman of warrs Companie) should answer for the<br />
dammage they had done to the said shipp ''hopewell'' and<br />
her Companie and lading, to which the said Lieutenant<br />
