'''John Eldred''' of Wappinge in the Countye of Middlesex mariner aged about 48<br />
yeares sworne before the worshipfull Basill Wood doctor of Lawes Surrogate to the<br />
right worshiipfull Sir Henry marten Knighte Judge of his Majetyes High Court of<br />
the Admiraltye sayeth and deposeth uppon his aoath as followeth videlicet That he<br />
hath knowne the shipp the ''Magdalen and Margott'' wherof Peter Reyn<br />
was master in her last voyage) for these five yeares last past, and<br />
within that tyme went in her five voyages from the porte of London, to<br />
Norwaye, and in every of those voyages he sayd shipp was a very weake<br />
rotten and leakye shipp, and this deponent and company by reason of the<br />
leakines and insufficiencye of the said shipp were im danger<br />
of being cast away and perishinge in the sea for that the backe of the sayd<br />
shipp was soe weake that in foule weather when<br />
the after part of the sayd shipp was in the sea and raysed up agayne by<br />
the waves, and the fore parte of her was downe agayne in the sea she<br />
was soe weake and did soe buckle or bend that this deponent and companye<br />
were much afrayd that the fore part of her would<br />
have fallen awaye and that the sayd shipp would have perished in the sea<br />
and this deponent did from tyme to tyme acquainte Mr<br />
Jeremy Crewe the owner of the sayd shipp what insufficeincye he<br />
found in her every of the sayd voyages and tould him that unlesse he did bestowe some cost of her she would sinke in the sea and the sayd Crewe<br />
did continually deferr the repayrine of her untill the next winter<br />
but for all the tyme this deponent went in her the sayd Crewe bestowed<br />
noe reparations uppon her but caulkinge, for which she was little the<br />
better for when she came to sea by reason of her weaknes thta<br />
caulkinge workte out of her seames agayne,, and that after the sayd<br />
shipp had bene repayred by Bryan Kiplinge before<br />
her goeinge forth on her last voyage and was gonne downe<br />
the river of Thames soe farr as Greenewich the sayd Crewe came<br />
to this deponent and tould him<br />
that the sayd shipp was noe lower then Greenwich and that she<br />
had six or seaven foote water in her hould and desired him this deponent<br />
to goe downe to her to sea what she ayled but this deponent havinge other<br />
occasions to goe downe to her. And this deponent<br />
further sayeth that when he went in her her timbers were<br />
soe rotten that they would crumble in his hands like durt And this<br />
he affirmeth uppon his oath to be true./
