IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I John Hodges of London Alderman being in perfect health and memory (I praise Allmightie God) at the makeing of this my last will and testament,
FFIRST and before all other transitory matters, I doe comitt my soule unto the handes of allmightie God my Creat:er, and to Jesus Christ his onely sonne my Redeemer, and to the holie ghost my sanctifier, Three persons, but one onely wise God, To whom be all hono:r and praise now and ever Amen,
And for my bodie I doe not desire any greate funerall, but that I may be decently buried and laid in the Church of St Stevens in Walbrooke as neare to my pewe as may be,
And for my personall estate I doe bequeath in manner and forme followinge, after my debtttes being paid, as well due by lawe as due otherwise being due debts, my desire is, that they should be paid as soone as possibly they maie bee,
And secondly I doe bequeath unto my wife Elizabeth Hodges, one third pte of my personall estate, as it shall please god to send my debts in, which wilbe as neare as I can gesse, some six thowsand pounds if debts and wares prove good, Also I doe give unto her her chamber furnished worth 50 or 60:li accordinge to the Custome of the Cittie of London,
And for the two other thirds which is my third part, and my three sonnes thirdes, my will is, that it should be disposed of as followeth my legacies being performed,
FFIRST I doe bequeath out of my 3:th and my children 3:th all my landes in Layhame in Suff to my sonne John hodges, and to his heires males lawfully begotten and for want of such heires males lawfully begotten and for want of such heires of his bodie, To Thomas Hodges, and to his heires lawfully begotten and for want of such heires of his bodie, to Will:m Hodges my 3:th sonne, And to his heires lawfully begotten forever, And also I doe devise and bequeath unto my sonne John Hodge in money the some of Two Thousand pounds, if my debtts doe prove good, Also I doe give and bequeath unto Thomas Hodges my second sonne my ffive howses in Bucklesbury and to his heires forever which I purches of M:r John Lyon, And also I doe bequeath him one of his owne third and my third more the some of Two thousand poundes, To be paid as my debts shall come in And for want of his heires, To my sonne Will:m Hodges, and to his heires forever, Also I doe give and bequeath unto William Hodges my Third sonne the some of three thousand pounds out of his owne third, and my third, Also I doe give unto William Hodges my sonne the Lesse of the Christopher Bucklebury some 28 yeares yet to come, he paying 8:li p Annum to the Lanlord M:r Stiles at 4 usuall ffeastes, at Christmas, o:r Ladyday Midsomm:r and Michaelmas or within 28 daies after, Also I doe bequeath and if there be any Surplus over of my 3 and my childrens thirds, My legacies and funeerall being payd and performed, To be devided in 3 parts for my sonne John Hodge, Two Thirds to my sonen Thomas and two thirds to my sonne Will:m Also I doe give unto the pson of our pishe whomsoever hebe at the tyme of my decease the sume of x:li to buie him mourninge, Also I do give 60:li to 60 poore men for gownes, Also I doe give to the poore children of Christs Hospitall for their releife the some of x:li [i.e. Ten pounds] And also I doe give unto the Treasurer and M:es there the sume of xx:li [i.e. Twenty pounds] for a Symen (sic) to be made the day of my ffunerall, yf I doe not dye of the situation of God of this greevious sickenes of the Plague, which God ?ptect mee and mine from, if it bee his good pleasure and will Also I doe give unto the Company of Grocers of whome I am a brother of the some of xl:li, [i.e. ? pounds] To make the Wardens and assistants and livery a dinner Also I do give unto them for a memoriall of my love a Basen and Ewer worth 33:li vj:s 3:d Also I doe give to the poore of the Two Counters, To be disposed of by the Sheriffs then being 5:li, to each of them, Also I doe give to the poore of Ludgate 5:li, And the like to Newgate, Also I would have Samuell Eliettes my Servant continue with my sonne Thomas Hodges and William Hodges to ayde and assiste them out of his love, as I did for him at his fathers request lyinge in his death bed which I have faithfully pformed

And whereas his father gave him as appeareth in his will the some of one hundred and twenty pounds which I stand bond for in the Chamber of London, The moneies being ?received by my meanes otherwise if it had been omitted but one daie it had been all lost which 120:li my will is shalbe paid him, And I doe give and bequeath unto him for a legacie, the some of fowerscore more pound to make upp his Two hundred pound, Also I would have Thomas Hodges and William Hodges lett him have 150:li of each of them, that is of both 300:li, he payinge no use to them for seven yeares if they continue so long to trade together, And my will is in him that he wilbee as faithfull to them as I was to his father for him, Also I doe give unto my freind M:r John Jarrett a ring of gold of x:ls with a deathshead in it, Also I doe give unto M:r John Brand a ring of gold with a deathshead, Also I doe give unto my sonne Johns wife, for a memoriall of my love, the some of ffiftie poundes, Also I doe give unto John Hodges my kinsman for a legacie the sume of ffiftie pounds, Also I doe give and bequeath unto Besse ?Southake my wives maid the some of ffortie pounds, And to Bevis Wood my servante the some of Tenn pounds, And to the rest of my servants men and maids that shalbee dwelling w:th me at the time of my decease the some of ffortie shillings a peece, Also I doe give v:li to be given to the poore by my Executors, not as a ?doell, But to give x:s [ten shillings], to x (ten) poor parishes in London, Also Whereas I made a wryting unto my sonne John Hodges wherein I did give him certaine Cloathes which were sent into Turkey by him, It is not my will that he should have that made over to him but that writinge to bee of noe force, which if he doe cancell, and a bond which he gave unto mee for the payment of certaine sommes of money which I stood bound for him for them cloathes and others shalbe likewise canseld and of none effect, Then my will is That he shall have and ioye the full pte and moitie heare sett downe in my will and not otherwise, And this much I thought good to declare to the end I would have noe controversy to arise betweene my wife there mother and my children, but that they should agree peacablie, and quietlie together in the ffeare of God, ffor a litle with quietness is better than much with strife and contention, And so prayinge allmightie god prosper and keepe them in love and unitie together all their daies. Moreover I doe give unto M:es Shore which was my M:es, sume of twentie pounds, and a bond of Tenn pound, which her sonne Shore doth owe me, Also I doe give unto M:es Thomasin ?Offeld the sume of Thireteene pound which I would praie her to give unto M:r Hewett Staper, which was anerror as I take it in her husbands lifetime committed, Also I doe make and ordaine my three sonnes John Hodges, Thomas Hodges and William Hodges to be my Executors, and doth ioyne my servant and find XXX Samuell Elletts, to order all thinges indifferentlie betweene them, both for the receivinge in of my debtes and paying of my debts and legacies,
