Biographical synthesis
James Thomas (b. ca. 1625; d. ?). Mariner.
Steward of the Hopewell (Master: Henry Powell) on her voyage to West Indies and at time of her seizure at Antego in October 1652.
Resident in 1653 in Poplar in the parish of Stepney.
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Twenty-eight year old James Thomas deposed on October 21st 1653 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on an allegation on behalf of Henry Powell, the master of the ship the Hopewell in the cause of "Lewellyn Austen and others against Powell".[1]. On the same day he was examined on an allegation made in the Acts of Court on behafle of Powell and mariners in the case of "Powell and others the mariners of the Hopewell against Austin".[2]
The case concerned the seizure of the Hopewell at the island of Antego.
