Transcription tips
[Comments by Colin Greenstreet, 03/06/14]
Roger Towner on Phil Hnatkovich's team (Team One) has done an excellent first cut transcription. Congratulations to him.
A few tips, having taken the liberty to do a light edit (no more was required) of his transcription:
- "wch" is a contraction for "which". Please expand all contractions.
A list of contractions and their correct expansion can be seen at Contractions and Expansions
- "&" (ampersand) is a contraction, and should always be expanded to "and"
- Doubtful words or doubtful letters - please put square brackets around the doubtful letter, group of letters or word, and put a question mark at the start of the letter, group of letters, or word, within the square brackets, for example [?Perkins] - If you are doubtful about the transcription of the Master's name as "Perkins", write [/Perkins]. Once the doubt has been resolved by you or your team facilitator, then the "?" and the square brackets can be removed.
" "depon:t" or "depo:t" is a contraction and should be expanded to "deponent" (the person who is being deposed, that is who is addressing the substance of each article in the Libell or Allegation).
- In the wiki all ship names should be in itallics. For example Brazil ffrigott. In the wiki this is done by putting two superscript commas before and after the word. Don't use speech marks (which doesn't produce an itallic effect), but use two single superscript commas (which does produce the itallic effect).
